REGLAN  (METOCLOPRAMIDE HYDROCHLORIDE):  This medication is used to treat certain conditions of the stomach and intestines. Metoclopramide is used as a short-term treatment (4 to 12 weeks) for persistent heartburn when the usual medicines do not work well enough. It is used mostly for heartburn that occurs after a meal or during the daytime. Treating persistent heartburn can decrease the damage done by stomach acid to the swallowing tube (esophagus) and help healing. Metoclopramide is also used in diabetic patients who have poor emptying of their stomachs (gastroparesis). Treating gastroparesis can decrease symptoms of nausea, vomiting, and stomach/abdominal fullness. Metoclopramide works by blocking a natural substance (dopamine). It speeds up stomach emptying and movement of the upper intestines. This drug is not recommended for use in children due to an increased risk of serious side effects (such as muscle spasms/uncontrolled muscle movements). Ask the doctor or pharmacist for details.    (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

1  Nausea Had nausea after a colon resection and was given one dose of Regalan just before leaving hospital. For almost one week I had Diarrhea hourly (that's HOURLY !). Needless to say, lack of sleep made clear thinking impossible. Began to wonder about "packing it in". A home-made antidote returned everything to normal overnight ! The antidote was a combination of 1 TBS vinegar....1/2 tsp Metamucial and half-glass of water. Sounds like mumbo-jumbo but, it saved my life. M 86 1 days

1  nausea after surgery, then stomach Diagnosed with Parkinson's, so the dr. stopped the Reglan. A neurologist specializing in Parkinson's finally gradually decreased the Parkinson's meds til they were stopped. This made the diagnosis Parkinsonism, a mimicker of Parkinson's. Parkinson's is a degenerative disease that doesn't get better and you never stop your meds. After a 4 yr. journey, though, this journey is over! Mask-like face, unable to express emotions, standing, slow & shuffling gait, altered handwriting - all Parkinson's symptoms & all brought on by Reglan 1st administered in hospital to help with nausea & continued for 1 year. DO NOT TAKE REGLAN!!!!!!!! F 84 13 months

1  prescribed during chemo tremors, loss of appetite, depression, fatigue, confusion, dizziness, yellowed eyes and skin, slow movements, mask-like facial appearance. My 83 year old father was prescribed Reglan two years ago when he underwent chemo/radiation for lung cancer. He has been seen regularly by his oncologist, neurologist, and internist. In February, 2006, he suffered a stroke. He recovered from the stroke symptoms, but has been going downhill fast. I was shocked to read where this drug should not be taken over 12 weeks. My poor father has been taking this drug daily for over 2 years! He has experienced all of the mentioned side effects, but none of our doctors suggested stopping it until yesterday, August 15, 2006! If he would have stayed on it, I truly believe he would have died. Please pay attention and ask questions. Doctors are not God, although some think they are. M 83

1  Nausea from high blood pressure Took this drug in 2007. Unable to balance well when walking; tend to drift to one side. Occasionally use a walking cane for support. Currently (2009) in my third round of physical therapy. Numbness in left side of face and tongue; lost taste sensation, can only distinguish hot vs. cold food. Supposedly a drug is approved because the benefits outweigh the side effects; how did Reglan get approved? Allowing this drug to destroy so many people's quality of life is criminal. F 82 3 months

1  Mom took it for stomach distress depression, tremors, became almost paralyzed, couldn't communicate, death Please take anything other than this drug. I'm convinced it led to my mothers death, although I have no direct proof. After she died I read all the reports connected to reglan and it was like reading her story. Eventually her organs shut down because she became bedfast and unable to eat. It's toxic! It was prescribed for several years off and on, mostly on. She would have other problems and be put in the hospital where she would be taken off it and improve, then they'd put her back on it again. I pray no one else goes through what she, and we did. F 76

1  gastritis My father ( age 74) began taking Reglan a few months back for gastritis. He immediately began having trouble holding his head up and began shuffling when he walked, became depressed and nervous. 3 months into the medicine, he is just a shell of the vibrant and happy person he once was. He is anxious, nervous, depressed and cowered down, like he is afraid of everything. He has no emotions, doesn't cry or get mad, isn't happy about anything and is a totally different person than he was before the medicine. Even after expressing our worry about this drug, we were unable to get our doctor to understand our concerns. The intern who was assisting him at the time assured us that if there were side effects such as he had mentioned that they would go away when the medicine was discontinued. This was a complete lie. We stopped the medicine over 3 weeks ago and even though we were assured that it would get out of his system quickly, he has not changed. Another doctor assred us that he gave out the medicine as if it were "candy". I certainly don't want to "trick or treat" at his house! We pray daily for help. This is unbelievable that a drug with this kind of patient response is on the market. M 74 3 months

1  Gastroparesis Severe depression and and anxiety leading to mental breakdown My mother was prescribed this medication and soon after discontinuing med she started with depression, anxiety, nervousness, insomnia, anorexia, and confusion. This medication took an active senior citizen who traveled, had a circle of friends to socialize with, maintained her single home on her own, drove her own car and appeared 10 years younger than her age to a depressed, suicidal, crazy women. Weeks after stopping the medication along with the side effects she appeared to have aged 10 years older then what she was. Since she always looked 10 years younger, this was such a significant change. She had to move in with family, give up her house, could not drive anymore, refused to even talk with famy or friends on the phone, constantly worried, complained she felt as though she were "jumping out of her skin", could not eat, and had suicidal ideations. Despite therapist, doctors, antidepressants and anti anxiety meds, my mother gave up her battle and refused water and food and a living will stated she desired no hydration, medical intervention, or tube feedings. She was lucid enough to re enforce her wishes. I believe this medication led to a complete mental breakdown as to which she was not returning from. My mother died one week later and though she is no longer sufferring, I am so mad at this drug, the manufacturer and medical professionals for allowing unknowing patients to be subjected to such a terrible, destructive medication F 74 8 months

1  GERD Needs to be taken off market. This drug is dangerous! My mother was given Reglan post hiatal hernia surgery. About 2 weeks after the surgery she was taken to ER with stroke like symptoms. The doctors did not consider drug reaction therefore she was sent back home only to be back in ER one week later with dizziness/weakness after stopping Reglan (the day before). She wants to sleep 24/7 and is shaky, dizzy, has blank stare, has severe neck pain, etc. Doctors gave run tons of tests and everything is fine so they now believe we have to wait for this drug to be out of her system and pray there are no permanent issues.  1  acid reflux Severe anxiety and depression It took me almost three months for the physician to discover that Reglan was the source of my extreme anxiety and depression. I have never suffered from these before, and the anxiety and depression were debilitating. I even considered suicide. It took over two months for me to return to normal, and I have had no recurrence of either condition since. For the stomach problems? I'm modifying my eating habits. F 72 3 months

1  Gerd depression, anxiety, insomnia, suicidal thoughts, tardive dyskinesia I was prescribed Reglan while waiting for a new PPI drug to start working for acid reflux. About that time we had a traumatic family event and I became very depressed and attributed it to the stress and grief in my life. However it got worse and worse: depression, suicidal thinking, terrible sadness, insomnia, anxiety, panic and I clenched my teeth constantly (tardive dyskinesia). After 4 months of this it occurred to me that there was something else going on besides family issues and God gave me the insight research this drug which showed a long list of psychotic symptoms. I stopped it immediately and it took a couple of months to start feeling better and 2 full years to completely feel my old self. Even today years later I still clench my teeth when I am tense. My advise is to become fulling acquainted with a prescription's side effects so that you won't be caught unaware. 72 4 months

1  acid reflux anxiety, tremors, agitated, insomnia, lost appetite, fluctuating blood pressure, hot flashes, couldn't be left alone, sensitive to all noise, could not focus on anything. The affects of Reglan were insidious. After taking it for about 4 months I noticed I was starting to worry excessively about things and was having trouble sleeping. My Dr. increased the dosage from 10 mg 3 times a day to 4 times a day and suddenly all of the side effects previously stated appeared. Reglan is a deadly poison. F 71 6 months

1  gastricparsis Severe hand tremors, involuntary jaw movement, increased BP, racing pulse, depression, anxiety, bizarre dreams. I'm in withdrawal and have been researching reglan and found this article which might be helpful to convince a doctor that the depression and other problems are from reglan. http://www.pubmedcentral.nih.gov/picrender.fcgi?artid=1002885&blobtype=pdf I'm very depressed and suffer some terrible anxiety attacks. Doctor prescribed celexa but hesitate to use it as it has terrible side effects. This drug should be classicified as an antipsychotic or neuroleptic drug.
