1  UTI BEWARE esp. if you are elderly............my mother had kidney failure from Bactrim combined w/Rx water pills............. can cause dangerously high potassium levels. Had extreme shaking and body pains; still in hospital 3 days now. Kidney Dr. "not sure how well she will recover". Question your Dr. if he prescribes for an elderly person or even maybe if you are not so old................... almost killed my mother and she may never bounce back.................. F 94 1 weeks

1  Urinary Track Infection I was diagnosed with a mild urinary track infection. I am lucky to be very healthy at my age, but after only three doses of Bactrim, I collapsed and was taken by ambulance to the hospital. I spent two days in the hospital. My doctor confirmed that my lab tests showed that Bactrim was destroying both my kidneys and the marrow in my bones. He said that I had been "gravely ill" due to the Bactrim. I'm lucky to be alive after taking this drug. Beware! F 87 1.5 days

1  UTI Extreme tiredness but had insomnia, loss of appetite, heightened confusion, nausea, dizziness We thought my mother in law was dying because of this drug!! She is 86 years old, has Alzheimer's and is blind. Was prescribed this med for a UTI. We thought it was just her time when she stopped eating and had no appetite. This tends to happen at the end of someone's life who has Alzheimer's. We found out later that it was this drug that gave her the symptoms that she was beginning to die!! We even arranged for hospice to care for her!!! Take this drug OFF THE MARKET!! F 86 10 days

1  UTI Headache, nausea, shaking, nervousness and beginning stomach discomfort. While waiting for cuture this was prescribed. Probably the worst antibiotic I have ever taken. Decided to stop after one and a half days. That was yesterday and I am beginning to feel a little less of the side effects. I read on one website that one only needs to take one dose but pharaceutical company still says 10 days, but site recommended three days. If culture comes back positive will ask for a different drug for sure. F 84 1.5 days

1  MRSA Cellulitis of the big toe Terrible insomnia, complete depersonalization, abdominal pains, nausea, vomiting, decreased urination, anorexia, confusion, sweating, delirium, you name it! Only side effect I didn't get was skin problems. Doctors thought I was crazy but after reading about it-I realized these reactions happen frequently!! Hate this med and anyone who'd prescribe it, especially when the patient is blamed for feigning side-effects. F 83 5 days

1  possible insect bite Severe breathing problems, pain and weakness in legs, disorientation, wierd dreams, loss of appetite, pain in lower legs (especially veins), loss of balance. Soon to be 82, and having had COPD for decades, I went to the ER for what appeared to be an insect bite on my left hand. After blood tests showed negative, I was given a 20 day supply of Bactrim to be taken 2xday. I took one tablet that evening. The next day I felt strange and my breathing problems were more pronounced, but I thought it was the air pollutants. The following day I took another and my problems grew worse. After the 3rd tablet I had extreme difficulty breathing and none of my medications would help and I THOUGHT I WAS GOING TO DIE. My wife took me to the ER (again) and was admitted to the hospital where I had multiple blood tests and examinations by at least 15 doctors (military hospital). I was on various IV's most of the time I was there, mostly to flush me out and give me antibiotics. I was discharged and given Prednisone and Azithromyazin?, an the following day I felt GREAT! 5 days later, I still feel great and really breathe better than I have in a long time, probably the Prenissone. This medication (Bactrim) is dangerous, and, according to what I have researched, never should have been given to me, an 81 year old male with COPD. It has been banned in the UK after causing multiple deaths, and why it is still prescribed her in the US is beyond me. M 81 3 days

1  Eye infection (stye) Reporting for my mother who is still sick from the effects: severe diarrhea, extreme lethargy, extreme weakness, nausea, memory issues, dull stomach pains, no appetite, lost 10 pounds in a few days!! My mother, 80, took this for a week. On Day 4 she began feeling the bad effects. On Day 5 she was "hit hard" feeling extreme weakness, severe diarrhea, low blood pressure, lethargy. She is a very sharp and strong lady, but she was acting atypically (memory affected, said she was dreaming/hallucinating.) SCARY!! She stopped taking the Bactrim on Day 8. Today is Day 12 and she is still very weak, no appetite, has dull stomach pains, still lethargic. At least the diarrhea has let up and her blood pressure is up. I am so thankful for this website because now I feel less worried, seeing everyone else's reports. At least we now have a probable cause! The dr. wasn't much help. F 80 7 days

1  uti I AM 80 YEAR OLD FEMALE, THE VERY NEXT DAY AFTER TAKING BACTRIM I WOKE UP WITH SEVERE PAIN IN MY HIPS AND LEGS, FEET, TOES, ETC I CALLED DR WHO SAID THESE WERE NOT SIDE EFFECTS AND CONTINUE TAKING IT, WHICH I DID, EVERY DAY THE PAIN SPREAD AND WAS WORSE, I SOAKED IN EPSOM SALTS, RUBBED WITH EMU OIL, WRAPPED IN TOWELS SAT WITH FEET SOAKING IN EPSOM SALTS. AFTER THE LAST DAY OF THE DRUG WAS DONE, THESE SYMPTOMS LESSENED,; HOWEVER, FURTHER CT SHOWED SPINAL STENOSIS, DR. ASSUMED THIS WAS THE CAUSE, AND NOT THE DRUG. I DO REMEMBER AN ADVERSE REACTION TO SULPHUA DRUGS OVER 50 YEARS AGO, BUT HAD FORGOTTEN FOR WHAT. I NOW HAVE HAD A LUMBAR LAMINECTOMY. AM VERY ALLERGIC TO DRUGS, SEIZURE LIKE SYMPTOMS, ETC.  1  Uti Mom got diagnosed with a uti, in june 2018. (Had a complete physical, including bloodwork may 15th, and was in great shape, including her kidneys). Only symptom was being a little tired. Dr put her on bactrim on a thurs afternoon. By sunday, she was so weak, i had to put my arms, under her arms to left her to her feet if she was seated in a chair. (Previously, she was mobile, vacuuming, grocery shopping, bending over to pick up dog poop, etc. Didnt use a cane or anything.). On monday morning she was too weak to be able to get out of bed, without my brother pulling her upright. Went to dr monday, they ran bloodwork and took her off bactrim. Wednesday morning they called and said to get her admitted to the hospital, as she was in acute kidney failure. 1 month in hospital, 7 dialysis treatments, then she died 11 days later. I did read later that bactrim can knock out the tubules to your kidneys. I would never take it after losing my mom this way. Avoid. F 80 3 days

5  Mrsa infected laceration Minimum side effects. Some stomach gas for first 3-4 days. Maybe some initial muscular weakness but that could have been the infection. Infection was substantial due to the MRSA not being detected for a few days. Then Bactrim was prescribed. The laceration cleared up completely over about a week. I was advised to take a probiotic to minimize gastric effects. The side effects were minimal and the Bactrim was effective. Five points! M 79 10 days
