LITHIUM CARBONATE  (LITHIUM CARBONATE):  This medication is used to treat manic-depressive disorder (bipolar disorder). It works to stabilize the mood and reduce extremes in behavior by restoring the balance of certain natural substances (neurotransmitters) in the brain. Some of the benefits of continued use of this medication include decreasing how often manic episodes occur and decreasing the symptoms of manic episodes, such as exaggerated feelings of well-being, feelings that others wish to harm you, irritability, anxiousness, rapid/loud speech, and aggressive/hostile behaviors.    (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

4  BiPolar Weight loss - I thought for sure I would gain a bunch because that's my tendency - but alas, something good. I like lithium - my body seems to like it too. I had a physician tell me it increases gray matter by 3%. SIGN ME UP. I know this makes some people very ill and some have tremendous weight gain, but it is working for me. F 44 2 months

3  Severe Depression Severe Thirst, Excessive Water Loss, Shaky Hands, Frequent Loss of Coordination, Twitching Never really took a good hold (or any, on a good day it maybe had a hand hold) on my depression, only had any effect on me when I got 'boosters' added to also aid my depression, unknown if there is actually any effect, all I know is I have to go get my blood tested every three months for Lithium Poisoning.  2  Mood stabilizer More thirsty than usual and urinated a lot more frequently, especially when first taking the drug. Some bloating in the abdominal area. I did not experience too many unpleasant side effects from this medication. It did not make me gain weight, which was something I worried about after reading others' reviews of the drug. Unfortunately, it did not help stabilize my moods. Increasing the dosage only seemed to make me angrier and more impulsive. You do have to watch the amount of salt you eat. If you suddenly increase or decrease your salt intake by a significant amount, it effects your lithium level, which can counteract the efficiency of the drug at best or be toxic at worst. It's also a good idea to be careful with alcohol as it seemed to make it way too easy for me to end up being black-out drunk. F 38 90 days

1  Bipolar Extreme weight gain, Highly ineffective About as ineffective as a placebo. It did nothing for my bipolar at all, no change in moods, in fact my family said I seemed to be twice as irritable and snappy while on Lithium than I was before. I couldn't notice it, but everyone around me did. Extreme weight gain, I was gaining about 11 pounds per month which is not cool. With my metabolism, it's extremely hard for me to lose weight unless I starve myself and gaining it is easy as cake, plus heart problems run in my family so the last thing I need is a medicine that doesn't work but makes me fat and unhealthy. I am 29 now, I took Lithium at age 21. F 29 3 months

4  Bipolar ll Lots of Weight gain... Always hungry. I can never tell if im hungry or full. I went from 160lbs to 200 in the last year that I've been on lithium. It makes it impossible for me to lose the weight. Other than the horrible side effects that it has had on my body, I have to say that my moods are stabilized. F 18 1.5 years

4  Bipolar II acne in weird places, thirst, frequent urination (wakes me up 5x a night) I consider the side effects to be minimal and don't really think about them much. Lithium is a superior mood stabilizer to Valproate for me. It completely prevents mania, but not depression although it helps. I still require additional medications for depression, irritability, anxiety, OCD and intrusive thoughts. So far low dose Olanzapine + Lithium handles it all. M 35 4 years

2   Water retention, tiredness, extreme hunger and weight gain This medication made me ravenously hungry, even after trying to cut down to 150 mg.. I hated it. I felt like I was starving all the time, but it did level out my moods and my suicidal thinking. However, I also felt kind of dull and tired on it and I missed "my self" as it were. I may have stuck with the lower dose if not for the weight gain and intense hunger, obsessing about food all the time. F 48 30 days

5  Bipolar 1 Possible Bruxism. My complexion has actually cleared up and I've lost weight since starting lithium, as a side effect of stability, not lithium! I feel like this is what normal (non bipolar) people must feel like! I've been working so hard for so long to keep it together on my own, without medication, but have only just kept my head above water. Stability is so new to me and I can't beleive how much easier being healthy and functional is! The last time I was on meds it wasn't very successful, I hated the anti psychotics like seroquel and wasn't taking the best care of myself. Now I feel like I am stable and can continue on with my life without constantly struggling to just function when I'm depressed and not look like I'm on meth when I'm manic. Lithium is a great, tried and true drug in my book. Just drink plenty of water and get your labs done often. We know the risks of this drug over time, we don't with the others like abilify. Keep that in mind and do your research! Do not rely on your psychiatrist to make the best decisions for you. I've made that mistake several times in my life and it always ended badly. F 27 5 weeks

4  bipolar 1 I have small hand tremors when I don't drink water as recommended. Sometimes hot and cold spells (not very often). Insomnia.. There are a few side affects that effect me, but nothing to bad. I am put on seroquil to take before I lay down to help me sleep. I don't mind the side effects because it helps me with my mood swings. It turned my life totally around. I'm on lomotrogine and lithium M 32 2 days

2  Maintainance for Depression Depression, Suicidal thoughts, shaking of hands, Mood issues, random thoughts, Sleeping issues, nightmares, *People should not be treated like cats & dogs & given medicine that prevents fertility without telling then; feels like when they are Euthanized. Why do they keep medicines that Euthanize human beings? & worst of all, why do the Doctors lie to the patients about this fact? All a big business, do they even care about the patients Dreams? Doctors should tell Patients About The Fertility side effect orherswise is a violation of Human Rights!
