HALDOL  (HALOPERIDOL LACTATE):  Haloperidol is used to treat certain mental/mood disorders (e.g., schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorders). This medicine helps you to think more clearly, feel less nervous, and take part in everyday life. It can also help prevent suicide in people who are likely to harm themselves. It also reduces aggression and the desire to hurt others. It can decrease negative thoughts and hallucinations. Haloperidol can also be used to treat uncontrolled movements and outbursts of words/sounds related to Tourette's syndrome. Haloperidol is also used for severe behavior problems in hyperactive children when other treatments or medications have not worked. Haloperidol is a psychiatric medication (antipsychotic-type) that works by helping to restore the balance of certain natural substances in the brain (neurotransmitters).    (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

5  doctors keek insisting on it! I tend to sleep ALOT! and that puts on an extra 15 pounds that I hate. I was a little slower than normal but hey, better than erratic. my husband says im much easier to get along with when i take it and i agree 100%. I feel calm, normal "smoothed out" but NOT sedated or "medicated". Ive been on at least 6 others and this is the second try for haldol, and this time for keeps F 36 3 months

3  Bipolar Extreme weight gain, sleepyness, memory loss, unable to focus as usual. It is the ONLY medication that worked for me. The news anti psychotics do not work for me. So I am stuck. I am now not taking it at heavy dosage but lower doses, so it is more tolerable. M 30 5 years

1  anxiety Heavy mental and physical stagnance. Strong sedation, retarded feeling. I was on the stuff a few months when I was a preteen and I didn't know to think much of it then, but the second time I was on it later in life. Agh... The stuff was too stagnating I had to keep relooking at stuff I just had my eyes on. So I drank a bunch of coffee and that didn't help. Even though I have anxiety I was so out of it I called up an old friend that was a drug dealer and I asked him for some free coke so I could wake up. He came over with a couple eight balls and I snorted up half the bag. When the coke started to hit me my toung was out of my mouth swinging back an forth all over the place and my eyes were rolling up so I said to him maby we could chill later cause I'm really not feeling good right now so he left. Later on that day my legs just felt shaky as hell and I felt like I needed to walk around. I know it wasn't the coke because it never did anything like that to me before. So I just plain stopped taking the haldol. Haldol just wasn't the right kind of medication to treat my anxiety. M 23

1  my 90 yr old mother was taking it She got really psychotic and extremely anxious after taking it. Before that she was on the me-too drug, Seroquil for 8 months. Both are extremely dangerous in old people with dementia. Did not help at all. F 90 8 months

1  Anxiety during Lupus flare Psychosis and severe irritability while being on this dosage (age 21). The psychiatrist, not knowing (or caring?) that I was on both Haldol and Halcion, informed my parents that I was psychotic and should be institutionalized (?!). Thank God my Mom obtained both MRI and CAT scan results to prove those people wrong. Therefore, I strongly recommend to have your physician test other medications before agreeing to take either Haldol or Halcion. F 36 1.5 months

5  delirium and hallucination Although I felt very well, I felt as if I had absolutely nothing to talk about. I kept wondering about whatever was that had been so interesting during most of my life that I had suddenly lost ... But I was very much in contact with reality and for that I was thankful.  3  tourette syndrome first three yrs i was a zombie, and then i weaned off to respiridol. very bad experience with a blood pressure drop and extremely sick in the hospital for about a week. the second time around my tics got worse with the TS,so i needed something because i was in a lot of pain. i took haldol again and experienced acathesia, bad restlessness that is extremely indescribable. ive recently tried more drugs of its type- seroquel, respiridol, albilify, and a few others. i keep getting acathesia. also in case you wonder why they give this to patients with tourettes, they dont have any other meds made for TS yet, its still up in the air, seizure meds and antipsychotics are what they use and have for a long time used. ask your doc a ton of questions. ask about tardive dyskinesia after long term usage of haldol. also you can expect a whole lot of sleepiness. i used to sleep on this med from 4 in the afternoon until the nxt day at lunch time. the second time around on haldol all i got was acathesia. so until something better comes i deal with the pain of my tics, and i have learned relaxing, reducing anxiety, and not overdoing it helps my tics.  4  ocd, schitzoid thinking I felt sedated, but overall, at a low dosage, it helped me to stop obsessing with intrusive thoughts since it helps the brain to slow down and stop fighting all the time. I would recommend it because it is less sedating than seroquil and resperidol, and other similar drugs. Also, it does not induce the appetite. F 43 3 months

3  lsd overdose drowsiness; facial/jaw/neck - painful, uncontrollable muscular contractions, slurred speech I, like a fool, overdosed on LSD, experienced visual and auditory hallucinations, was a danger to myself. Was taken to the hospital within 36 hours, immediately placed on Haldol, the hallucinations subsided, but could not stay awake, hardly ate, at times lost continence. But family support I think is the main reason for my recovery. M 21 5 days

3  bipolar 1 very restless, loss of concentration, thirst, mentally slowed down Been put on because of signs of hypo/mania. Dosage: 0,5mg 5-6 times per day. Decreased the brain activity, slowed down racing thoughts. Slightly improved irritability, on the other hand increased it due to restlesness. First took it for 2 days every hour untill fell asleep. Than was taken off (by doc), continued with regular treatment. As racing thoughs and irritability appeared again, put on it again (1,5mg in the evening, 0,5mg during night if I wake up, 0,5mg in the morning). M 33 2 days

1  schizophrenia Slow thinking and movement, drowsy, muscle spasm's. Changed after 4 to 5 days to another drug and better. Not tired and awake, no problems with muscle's. Thinking was much improved. This drug was given to my daughter who did first time Crystal Meth, not a drug abuser but had a reaction and paranoia. She took 2mg 3 times a day. Despite what we told the doctor she remained on the med's for awhile. ONce taken off and placed on Zyprexia she was fine. I don't recommend this drug unless the person is really experiencing bad paranoia etc. F 20 5 days

1  Insomnia Severe Dystonic Reaction after 1 shot. Had to be taken to another ER to get antidote (Cogentin). The muscles in my legs and back locked up, couldn't sit still, worst feeling in my life. I couldn't sleep well for a few days. It got so bad that my wife took me to the ER. The brilliant doctor there decided to shoot me up with 10MG of Haldol. I want to sue him now. Haldol should NEVER be given for something simple like insomnia. I didn't know what kind of drug it was. 3 weeks later and I am still having severe anxiety and minor muscles twitches which doctors are telling are due to the trauma of a dystonic reaction. After reading many comments here, quite a few here have had dystonic reactions whether they knew it or not. It is a common and scary side effect. I also understand that this drug can permanently damage someone if taken long enough. Can't believe the FDA would approve this or an ER would give it out so willingly. M 37 1 days
