I developed terrible constipation, anxiety between doses, breathing problems, nightly nightmares, fatigue, catastrophizing, etc. | Stay away from Benzos. I managed to get off of it, but it had such a terrible effect on my mental and physical health. I know plenty who still can't get off Benzos. The side effects from tolerance are horrendous. It took me four months to taper off, and the withdrawal was hellish. I'd say that it took a whole other year for the withdrawal symptoms to fully recede. One night I was brutally attacked, resulting in severe anxiety and PTSD, so my doctor put me on Valium, which was a godsend! I had my life back and really made a successful life for myself. I stopped taking Valium in 1983, just because I had become an avid runner, which is probably the best type of medication for some of us. Other than minor lows and irritability, I really didn’t experience any of the common withdrawal symptoms associated with the discontinuation of Benzos; though we’re all different I guess. My advice for anyone wanting to treat their symptoms with Benzodiazepines, they really are a wonderful cushion for treatment if used responsibly. I would avoid the shorter acting more popular Benozos of today, like Xanax, Ativan, Halcion, Restoril etc. It seems like most of the Benzo horror stories in the media are due to those instead of the longer acting Benzos. Also I should state that my best friend started abusing Xanax with booze back in the early 80s, she had everything going for her. Once she finally made the attempt to become drug free, the withdrawals were severe, causing lifelong health problems that she still deals with today. Benzodiazepines are simply one of the most useful drug families in existence today; if you intend on using them long-term, just take them as needed and you should be fine. | F | 66 | 11 years 10 | 11/27/2019 | 5 | Panic Disorder, GAD, PTSD | I was prescribed Valium after an extreme panic attack that almost put me in the hospital. After taking it for two months, I am so much calmer and happier as a person in general, I’m excited about life again. The only “negative” side effect I’ve experienced is actually an exponential increase in my libido—I went from not want to ever have sex to having the sex drive of a 15 y/o boy even though I haven’t acted out on these impulses. My psychiatrist is confused because it’s usually the opposite. I’m not complaining, just sort of shocked that not only am I now calm I now have a sex drive for the first time in my life. The ugly divorce happens after you have been on the drug awhile, become addicted, become tolerant to the drug's effect, and your dose starts to climb. Benzos are the hardest drugs to withdraw from in all of modern medicine. Some ppl are never able to detox and they just stay on the drug and remain sick. It is a horrible feeling. I am currently using lexapro to try to help me get off valium one final time and it seems to be working after over 30 years of using benzos. I am now at day 18 using 10 mgs of lexapro and I can start to feel some of the anti-anxiety and anti-panic effects and I am getting some relief from the horrible bizarre benzo withdrawal symptoms. Spare yourself the agony and stay away from these horrible addictive monsters. Some ppl commit suicide to escape the agonizing withdrawals. It also helped with my anxiety and stopped my racing thought process. I had an exam the third day I took valium. The week before I was super anxious, scored 2/10 on my quiz. I knew the content and am a smart person but when I get super anxious I just can't focus and forget everything I have learned. Walked into the next quiz relaxed, and was able to think logically without sending myself into a panic when I found something difficult. Scored 9/10 that week.
