Misc symptoms related to neurotoxicity: fatigue, weakness, headaches, neck pain, stiff neck.muscle aches, ringing in ears | For anyone who is reading this, Flagyl (aka metronidazole) causes dysfunction and/or damage to the back region of the brain and also the nerves. This is due to the drug destroying a significant nutrient in your body called thiamine (aka, vitamin B1). In extreme cases, it is even possible to die from thiamine deficiency disease or become permanently disabled, so this is NOT a little problem. Most doctors are clueless when to comes to this toxicity and will try to convince you that you are crazy. You are not. This is real, but it's potentially treatable. I think the issues people are having is not being aware that you can CV consume ZERO alcohol. This includes extracts and per the new labeling AVOID PROPYLENE GLYCOL as well. Pylori | Neuropathy in head, legs, hands, insomnia, nausea, stomach pain, head and body twitching, zapping in the head, weakness in the legs, high heart rate, vision loss. | I took this medication for 11 days to treat H. Pylori bacteria. I suppose to take it for 14 days but on the 11th day I thought I am gonna die. I woke up with severe nerve pain running down my right leg and my calf swelled up and started burning. That is when I stopped taking this medication. When I was on it, I had severe stomach pain, nausea, leg weakness, and tingling toes. Soon after I finished this medication, my head and face went numb and I lost visual acuity in my left eye. I also had bad insomnia and head twitching an muscle twitching. Gradually, I developed neuropathy in my feet, legs, and arms. I’ve seen a neurologist for my symptoms and she denies that the metronidazole can cause such an adverse reaction, but I know that I never had neurological issues before taking this horrid medication. It’s been more then 8 months since I finished the course and I am trying to recover. It been very slow recovery with ups and downs and I hope that the time and God will heal me. The good part: it fixed the chronic diarrhea. I’ve IBS-D for several years, and then my dog got giardia and maybe gave it to me. After several weeks of that and two negative giardia tests, I asked my doctor to just medicated me. It cleared EVERYTHING up: the IBS-D is gone, too. The bad part: the 10 days on this medicine were so much worse than the IBS-D or maybe-giardia ever were. Wow. The last few days of the course of fragyl, I was crushingly depressed. People talk about an “impending sense of doom”, and that’s accurate. I felt like I was slowly dying. I thought: this is what chemo feels like, this is what dying of colon cancer feels like. And I think in some sense I was dying—it really is a kind of poison. I brushed my teeth constantly, but the bad taste always came back. I had no appetite, but I was starving. Food was all pretty universally unappetizing, and it went though me in a couple hours. It was a real struggle to make it through the day. I used a schedule of: 9 am breakfast and 1st dose 2 pm lunch and 2nd dose 7 pm dinner and 3rd dose Taking this right after a FULL MEAL (not a cracker or glass of milk but full meal) left me with zero side effects. This is a potent antibiotic and to think you can eat a saltine and take this without having side effects is on the one consuming the item!! Called and told my doctor after the 2 nd day that I couldn’t take this. He said to take only half the dose for the remainder of the 10 days. Said the cough is probably just a cold. It didn’t change anything. I felt just as bad for the next 4 weeks! The only thing that subsided within a day of stopping the meds was the cough! I had no energy what so ever for the following 7 weeks (I have always kept a journal of what I eat and do and take every day. I am a person who doesn’t normally take drugs, only vitamins and supplements) then some of my energy returned and the feeling of being out of breath going up the stairs and having a heart attack lessened. Tried to bike ride but couldn’t make it 5 miles let alone 15, seems I can’t breath as well as I did before. Yoga now hurts my hips terribly and I can’t lift the weight I used to before. It is now a year later and I still feel this way!!! | It also took me 4 months to realize the pain in my feet was caused by this drug! My feet hurt terribly every day, started with the bottoms and heel, the bones and ligaments. My dr sent me to a foot dr thinking I injured them (yes, both at the same time!!!), foot dr said plantar fasciitis. NO! It’s my ligaments! Told him I can stop the pain and have it move to another part of my foot just by rubbing or moving my heel, he prescribed shoe inserts and the contraption you wear to bed for plantar fasciitis...did not help, inserts actually made feet hurt more. Recently the pain has moved to the tops of my feet, no longer the bottoms! I realized it was from this drug because while reading back in my journal for something else I saw that the pain started the first day I took the meds!!! And continued as badly as it is ever since! I Currently looking for a new doctor! I hobble when I walk! I can’t even think about running or playing basketball anymore! And doctor doesn’t think it has anything to do with the medication!
