PROLIA  (DENOSUMAB):  Denosumab is used to treat bone loss (osteoporosis) in women who are at high risk for bone fracture after menopause. It is also used to treat bone loss in men who are at high risk for bone fracture. Osteoporosis causes bones to become thinner and break more easily. Your chance of developing osteoporosis increases after menopause (in women), as you age, if someone in your family has osteoporosis, or if you take corticosteroid medications (such as prednisone) for long periods. Denosumab is also used to treat bone loss in women who are at high risk for bone fracture while receiving certain treatments for breast cancer. Denosumab is also used to treat bone loss in men who are at high risk of bone fracture while receiving certain treatments for prostate cancer that has not spread to other parts of the body. This medication works by slowing bone loss to help maintain strong bones and reduce the risk of broken bones (fractures). Denosumab belongs to a class of drugs called monoclonal antibodies. It prevents certain cells in the body (osteoclasts) from breaking down bone.    (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

1  osteoporosis Delay in getting Prolia shot was associated with change in doctors at a university medical center. This resulted in multiple vertebral compression fractures. Severe pain, disability and deformity. I can no longer live my normal active life. The word "DELAY" appeared NOWHERE in any information I was given. My doctor retired & new doctor could not see me immediately and nothing was done to make sure I got shot on time. Bones fractured in WEEKS of when that shot was due. While bones have healed, deformity and pain persist. They put me back on Prolia and now that I've learned more I would like to get off it but there seems to be no way to do this SAFELY!!! Even switch to other drugs could be dangerous. And Prolia didn't do much for the osteoporosis. F 83 7 years

1  Osteopenia after breast cancer Nausea and extreme joint lasting Up to 3 months after the shot. Doctor kept saying I was the only patient that complained about it and pushed me to continue. I finally refused to continue in July of 2016. My most recent test in July of 2017 showed no change. Terrible drug for me. Negatively Impacted my quality of life for 6 months every year for 6 years.  1  Osteoperosis First 3 injections were OK. I had a 6 month break and then a 4th injection. Within two weeks I could hardly move. Felt like all my leg, grion and arm muscles had been kicked badly. 5 weeks later my Physician took blood and diagnosed very severe calcium deficiency and extremely high Thyroid levels. After urgent treatment and 6 weeks later my levels are back to normal, but pain still exists and is worse in the first half of the day. I am male, and 72 with only 30% kidney function. I live in Australia. I will never tough Prolia again, and worry about how it has ruined my quality of live. I was a very active person, and now have to get gardeners in etc do work I now cannot even think about. It has wrecked my life. 72 4 years

1  Osteoporosis I've been taking this for 4 years and recently discovered that even though it's supposed to make your bones stronger one of the side effects is it makes them weaker . Aww the irony! Two dentists this week told me how dangerous and risky Prolia is for the jaw bone and teeth.. I was told that I can not get implants or extractions. My rheumatologist told me dentists don't like Prolia but it's perfectly safe . No more Prolia for me ! Ugh! F 61 4 years

4  I had severe osteoporosis Very bad flu like symptoms. Severe achiness in hands and pain in hips that lasted for months. I was told that my symptoms were not related to Prolia and my doctors don't seem to believe me that Prolia can make me feel this way. F 64 3 years

4  Osteoporosis None so far. I do visit dentist every 3 months. 2 yearly cleanings and 1 between each visit. I exercise and do careful weight bearing, stretching and walking. I also keep my core and back strong. I stay on top of my diet for food based calcium intake and other nutrients. I am considering taking a plant based supplement Algaecal for bone health. I've noticed a slight decrease in my immune response and caught a few colds last year and 1 bout of the start of pneumonia. My platelet count had actually improved tho. I have had ITP for about 10 years (low normal platelet counts are inherited from my parents) with no other causes found. You have to be fully engaged and proactive in your healthcare especially if you are a 3rd generation female with osteoporosis. F 65 3 years
