PROLIA  (DENOSUMAB):  Denosumab is used to treat bone loss (osteoporosis) in women who are at high risk for bone fracture after menopause. It is also used to treat bone loss in men who are at high risk for bone fracture. Osteoporosis causes bones to become thinner and break more easily. Your chance of developing osteoporosis increases after menopause (in women), as you age, if someone in your family has osteoporosis, or if you take corticosteroid medications (such as prednisone) for long periods. Denosumab is also used to treat bone loss in women who are at high risk for bone fracture while receiving certain treatments for breast cancer. Denosumab is also used to treat bone loss in men who are at high risk of bone fracture while receiving certain treatments for prostate cancer that has not spread to other parts of the body. This medication works by slowing bone loss to help maintain strong bones and reduce the risk of broken bones (fractures). Denosumab belongs to a class of drugs called monoclonal antibodies. It prevents certain cells in the body (osteoclasts) from breaking down bone.    (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

5  Bone density Steady got to feeling sicker after the shot thought I would die. EXTREME weakness, muscle pain, skin problems little red dots, skin got very dry itching, chills night sweats severe blatter infections, headaches, heat feeling in both hips started out problem only in one hip now they both hurt!!!!! Severe jaw pain now problem with dentist worried about treating me. That's in the process maybe. All I can say is this drug is truly poison and just as bad as chemo. Never again will I trust pharmaceutical drugs. I'd rather die than continue this drug. Went to the hospital thinking I had a kidney stone and they found a lower spine problem that is also am having looked at this week. Life is not even good anymore! 68 0 years

5  Osteoporosis After 1 year, only 2 shots, I still had osteoporosis. I was encouraged by my dr to continue the shots for 1 more year. After 2 years on prolia my bone density now showed osteopenia! I never had a negative side effect! But something very positive did occur totally unrelated to osteopenia and I believe but have no proof that the prolia had totally taken away the extreme pain and fluid development I had been experiencing in my right knee for the past 5 years diagnosed as bone on bone! Can anyone explain this to me? F 71 2 years

5  Previous hip fracture Only side effect so far is a bladder infection. No pain, no rash, no jaw problems. Next injection is January 2014. The injection was completely painless. I also enrolled in the Prolia Patient Support Program and now get periodic emails with information on exercises and resources. I also received two telephone calls letting me know that I might be eligible for free injections. But my insurance company pays 100% of the cost so I paid little attention to the information.  5  Osteoporosis Dosage: 2 sub-Q shots per year. I had one shot 2 months ago and haven't had any side effects at all, thank God! I hope it continues to be side-effect free in the future. I am almost 51 and I have osteoporosis. I broke my ankle a few years ago just by rolling it off a sidewalk. It was very painful with a long recovery. This medication is supposed to increase bone density. There are also risks for one's blood calcium to decline while taking this medication. F 50 1 times

4  Severe Osteoporosis I am a -4.2 after an increase of 6% from Reclast. I have had 2 Prolia shots and have not experienced any side effects with Prolia. I have noticed that my fingernails and hair are growing faster. My spine feels better since I have started Prolia. Where I had pain from old compression fractures, I do not experience pain anymore. I make sure I get plenty of calcium from my foods and drink lots of water. I have 2 neighbors on Prolia. One has been on it 3 years and has no side effects. The other, two years without side effects! I will have a bone density test in February to see if it is helping. If not, I will choose to try Evenity. F 68 8 months

4  Osteoporosis Severe constipation. Using Miralax and it has helped. I got my first injection 3 months ago. I get one every 6 months. I have noticed mild back pain on my spine and the awful constipation but Miralax has really helped with that. Other than that I have no other symptoms. I have very severe osteoporosis so I am hoping this will help me. Something else I found was liquid calcium. I take it 3 times a day because my body does not absorb calcium properly. It has helped keep my blood calcium levels safe. F 75 3 months

4  Osteoporosis None so far. I do visit dentist every 3 months. 2 yearly cleanings and 1 between each visit. I exercise and do careful weight bearing, stretching and walking. I also keep my core and back strong. I stay on top of my diet for food based calcium intake and other nutrients. I am considering taking a plant based supplement Algaecal for bone health. I've noticed a slight decrease in my immune response and caught a few colds last year and 1 bout of the start of pneumonia. My platelet count had actually improved tho. I have had ITP for about 10 years (low normal platelet counts are inherited from my parents) with no other causes found. You have to be fully engaged and proactive in your healthcare especially if you are a 3rd generation female with osteoporosis. F 65 3 years
