3  RA After a number of the treatments I have experienced bouts of depression which last 5-7 days but this is not every time. Weight gain, severe acne, vision problems, localized itching. It took about 3 months for it really to kick in and take full effect. However, this is when the side effects really started taking affect. F 35 6 months

5  Psoriasis slight headache on and off, felt a bt nauseous at times, slight fatigue but Humira worked fast and cleared my skin in only 5 days....but then a few days before my second injection my psoriasis came back. I am thinking I may need to take it weekly instead of twice a month and will definately discuss with my doctor on my next appt. So wonderful to have clear skin even though it was for only a few days :) Just took my second injection tonight....so we shall see what happens. F 42 3 weeks

3  Crohn's biggest issue is skin cancer as am going to dermatoligist every 2 mths & having on average 8-10 pre-cancerous spots & 1-2 basal or squamous cell skin cancer removed, mainly on my legs, hands & chest. My skin is horribly dry everywhere & have bumps all over my body. Some are red like insect bites & others white bumps that are very dry. I also have very dry mouth, severe sinus infections & sores inside my nose constantly. When I started taking the Humira, it seemed to really have helped but now I am having more & more flare ups and all these side effects. I am headed back to Mayo Clinic soon & I am hoping that they take me off of it & try something new. I was previously on Remicade for 3 yrs however, was having alot of issues with blood loss, anemia & shortness of breath, even had to go on oxygen for awhile. The Remicade was not even staying in my system for 3 weeks and I was getting it every 6 weeks. F 54 2 years

3  RA Besides the side effects I have commented on prior to this, I have been experiencing other side effects within the last month, whether be it Humira that caused it, is yet to be concretely determined, but the symptoms worsen right after the drug is administered. I have been experiencing severe itching on a certain area of my back within the last couple of months and within the last month I have been having what looks like sever insect bites, some of which become really inflamed. New ones show up nearly everyday. I would say that I have no less than 15-20 of these everyday with new ones every morning. I had first thought I might have got insect bites being in weeds but I have notice that I dont have to be in weeds and bound to the house and still have them. They become worse right after taking the injections so I am going to treat it as a side effect of the meds. Right after I started taking the med, I had what seemed to be misquito bites on the lower extremeties, legs, thighs and M 59 12 months

Now plague psoriasis is back on knees and elbows. Scalp is worse now than before. First real side affect we noticed was the stopping of menstrual cycle, stopped after second injection never has started back. Just wondering if anyone else has had these same problems.  2  Crohns Extremely painful injections, swelling @ injection site - larger than 5 inches & is red,, hot and very itchy for 2 days, red rash on face, dry skin on face/ears, itching over entire body, "scattered" mind - can't keep things on track/straight, Possible weight gain (5-8lbs), At first the injection site was okay - painful but an ice pack prior to injection helped - then at about month 4 the injection site started to swell and the entire body itching began with no relief as of yet (now on month 12). My face has a very dry, red, scaly rash over the cheeks, nose, forehead, ears are dry and flaky. My last colonoscopy a few months ago showed significant improvement in the areas where my disease was bad - but these side effects are casuing me more problems than what I can deal with. The memory issues and the itching are too much - fearful my job has suffered because of the drug... not sure what I will be switching to but will not be taking Humira any more. F 42 12 months

4  RA During the first few months I had severe fatigue, mosquito like breaking out on lower body, dry/scaley skin but all of these side effects have slowly subsided and have not any other side effects due to use. I havent had any RA flares other than sensitive joints occasionally but nothing radical since started taking Humira. I needed hip joint replacement before I started taking it and still need replacement. It will not fix something a bad as my hips but does keep the joints from flaring which is a tremendous help.  1  RA Chest infection, sore throat, hair loss, tightness in chest, pain in back, shortness of breath, acne, weight gain I detest this medication and will NEVER take it again. After only three shots I'm now on antibiotics to fight a killer chest infection that has me laid low now for almost 3 weeks. No energy, insomnia, exhaustion, and living with the fear of a heart attack because the pain in my chest was so bad. I also gained 12-1/2 pounds in a week and a half.  5  Psoriasis no side effects! After maybe 2 shots in the past 7 months of taking them i got a hot rashno bigger that the size of a quarter around the injection site that clearned up after a few days. but NO PSORIASIS! 18 year old, female. started 7 months ago because i suffered from severe psoriasis in my scalp for two years that started to take a large emotional toll on my life. I was very self conscious and used every topical cream out there. Also used a variety of oral pills that had not done the job or did not take well with my body and i had very bad side effects. Humira was my last option and after weighing its possible side effects i chose to take it. Best thing i had ever done. i was entering college, started two weeks before and i'd say about 4 weeks into college i literally completely forgot i had even had psoriasis. I have no scaling, or peeling, or itchy. I wear black again. All i have to do it take one shot every two weeks. It worked for me when i thought there was no hope, please dont give up! F 18 7 months

2  PsA Weight gain, tiredness, joint pain, brain fog. Slow recovery after knee surgery, but not sure if that's related. I think it might be based on other's recovery after same type surgery. Started in Sept 2010 - noticed a bit of improvement in my arthritic symptoms. Never felt really good, however. Stopped 2 weeks before surgery (in Jan) and restarted after 2 weeks. I had one injection since and have decided not to return to the drug. I'm extemely achy now, more tired than usual and am now experiencing hand/wrist joint pain which I'm told is osteoarthritis in the basal joint. It's been recommended that I have additional surgery. I think I'll sit back for a while and see what happens. I'm relatively active - work out, walk, etc., and I just want to feel better! F 50 5 months

4  Crohn's Dry skin, memory loss, painful joints (may or may not be from drug...had this worse without the drug), frequent sinus infections. Some hair loss. You have to remember...this drug is for people who have had little or no relief from conventional drugs. It works really well for inflammation and is far better than uncontrollable bowel movements 20 times a day and crippling joint pain. You have to weigh the benefits verses the possible side effects. I for one, wouldn't be alive if not for this remarkable drug. It has given me my life back. You can find relief for the joint pain. My Rheumatologist has helped me tremendously. I have dealt with this disease for 8 years and would be glad to share my experience so feel free to e-mail me if you have any questions. GOOD LUCK ! M 49 2 years

Possibly related - pulled abdominal muscle. I have stinging at the injection site, but with icing prior it lessens the pain and feels like a bee sting which doesn't linger long. Prior to starting humira I was taking sulfasalazine and prior to that prednisone. My body had similar side effects to both of these drugs as well. I've taken (2) pen injections of humira, bi-weekly.  4  Crohn's joint pain, body aches and swelling, sore throat, tiredness, acne, exema has worsened, potential weight gain This was working like a charm for a couple of months, then I started breaking out. Got that under control and then I noticed minimal and sporadic swelling and pain in my hands. Over the past month, it has gotten worse and worse and spread to my feet, arms, elbows, legs, scalp, ankles, etc. Pain and swelling moves to different locations on my body on a day to day basis and the severity is different each day too with no consistancy or pattern that I can tell.  1  psoriasis HAIR LOSS! (alopecia totalis?) I was prescribed Humira for moderate to severe plaque psoriasis on my hands and feet. The drug seemed to clear the psoriasis fairly well but it was around after about 60 days of use I began noticing patchy hair loss on my scalp and arms. I have never had and signs of alopecia in the past and became quite concerned. My dermatologist, after about 30 days of continued hair loss, suggested I stop using the Humira because it might be the cause of my hair loss. I did and the hair loss seemed to subside and even grew back on my arms. That was about 4 months ago and unfortunately the hair loss hasn't gone away. In fact, after about a month of seeming somewhat better, the hair loss only worsened. At this point I have patchy bald spots on my head, no hair on my arms or legs, and a bald patch on one of my eyebrows. I am completely self conscious and depressed by what is happening and frantically searching for an answer. The doctors seem to think it is alopecia (possibly totalis/universalis) but haven't given me a definate. PLEASE if you have had any problems similar to mine and have any suggestions or answers, e-mail me. I would greatly appriciate any helpful advice and would be completely willing to share more of my story with anyone experiencing a similar problem. Thanks, Dave M 27 90 days

2  Crohn's Disease Was ok for about the first 4 or 5 months then developed psoriasis. Had extreme dry skin on face, arms, shoulders and chest area. Red dots on calves as well. Scalp was dry all over especially around the hair line and also behind the ears and flaking off and extremely itchy. Swollen lymph nodes and glands that were very sore and tender to the touch. Also had reoccurring case of anemia but this could have also been due to the 6-MP I was taking as well. I am not sure this drug did anything at all in my case really. My bowel habits were unchanged and stool formation was not normal at all as diarrhea continued throughout the course. I did not experience any positive symptoms until I started taking a prebiotic and probiotic complex that you can get OTC. Due to the extreme discomfort of the symptoms and my own personal concerns over the permanency of their effects I have stopped this medicine as well as 6-MP. I have continued with the prebiotic and probiotic and things are still excellent with those. I must also say that Remicade on the other worked great for me except that I eventually had an anaphylactic reaction to it so that removed that as an option. M 39 7 months

4  RA Humira was wonderful for my RA symptoms, significant relief. The dose was increased from bi-weekly following a number of surgeries(repair of torn tendon, knee replacement.) I was also taking 5mg. prednisone OD....BEWARE of lowering you immune system...I now have Merkel Cell Carcinoma..very rare but most likely from my impaired immune system. Have any blemish checked immediately and tell dermatologist you take Humira! Do not ignore them...this could save your life. Humira gave me back my life...I could finally move again. Humira does loose some of its effectiveness when it has to be stopped and started (as for surgery) frequently. That is why in my case I went from twice a month to weekly. Unfortunately repairing my immune system is not so easy....take with caution and never ignore even a small blemish particularly on face or neck.  5  Crohn's Occasional sore throat and general feeling as if I'm starting to get a cold, but this usually only lasts a day or two and no cold develops. Bruise more easily. Some injection site pain after injection, but ice and Tylenol help and its nothing unbearable (completely worth it for results and not having to take tons of pills each day). Bloated feeling the day after injection. Amazing treatment! It took me a long time to get comfortable with the idea of taking a biologic, but the results have been amazing. I feel better than I have felt in over 10 years and my symptoms are finally under control (had NO relief/results with prednisone, Asacol, Pentasa...). I began to see/feel results within 5 days of the initial dose (4 injections) and have gotten increasingly better ever since. I am not 100% better after 5 months, but I would say 85%, which is amazing to me. I finally see a light at the end of the tunnel and have started to think that maybe I won't be sick forever. Benefits FAR outweigh any minor side effect annoyances I have had. Every time I go on a trip I am so amazed and grateful that I don't have to haul along an extra bag for all my meds! Its a serious drug, so do your own research before you decide to go on it, but my experience has been very positive. F 32 5 months

5  Plaque Psoriasis Absolutely None Ive had moderate to severe Plaque Psoriasis for just over 7 years now, after 4 years of different teatments including UV, Oral and topical, nothing was working, nothing would even put a dent in the plaques, finally my dermatologist suggested Humira, afer weighing the pro's and con's I decided to give it a try and boy am I glad, Humira has given me a new lease on life, I recently moved and needed a new prescription for it, afraid of the plaques returning, I was frantically trying to get in to see a new doctor for the prescription (like a crackhead looking for a fix) That is the only concern I have, is that when you stop taking the injections, the plaques return.. Have been plaque free for 3 years and it has indeed changed my life. no more long sleeve shirts and pants in summertime!! If you have any questions about this drug, feel free to email me, I will naswer anything I can.. M 30 3 years

3  Rheumatoid Arthritis and Lupus Injection site pain and bruising (lasts about a week), drug causes a lump under my skin that goes away quickly, sometimes I bleed (usually just a drop of blood), frequently aware of nasal draining (by smell, taste), sore throat when waking that goes away. I've always had a bad memory, but it is pretty terrible now (I believe due to pain meds, but I can't tell if Humira has made it worse or not) and I only mention it because so many others have on this website. I also am very tired all the time, but that's probably due to my severe sleep apnea and pain meds. I believe that Humira has worked for me, so far. Either that, or it is possible that my (severe) RA could be mostly in remission. Two months after starting Humira, I've had another issue with my ring finger where it locks in the position it was in when I went to sleep. In the beginning, it will open up during the day, but gets worse over 1-2 weeks until it doesn't release at all. I had to go to my doctor to get an injection in the joint to release it. This happens to both ring fingers and they alternate every few months. Before I was diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis and Lupus, I had really bad pain and stiffness in my fingers, wrists, ankles, and knees. I'd wear braces wherever I went and the pain was severe when I'd move the "wrong" way. That stopped almost completely a few months after taking Plaquenil & Meloxicam, but my damage hadn't slowed enough, so my doc stopped Meloxicam and started a replacement drug (either Etodolac or Venlafaxine) and then Humira a few months after that. Luckily, I qualify for the $5/mo program. SIDE EFFECTS NOTE: I have other conditions and take other drugs, so the nasal draining and sore throat could be caused by the other drugs or could have something to do with my lowered immune system (is it lowered in only 4 months of taking the drug?). I have severe central sleep apnea, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Lupus, Degenerative Disc Disease, Stenosis (disc narrowing), Osteoarthritis, Bone Spurs, Herniated discs in my back and neck, and S F 31 4 months

5  Psoriatic Arthritis Injection itself extremely painful, and causes worse than usual sickness when alcohol is drunk. Lately experiencing mood swings although not 100% whether this is the humira or not. Otherwise the benefit greatly outweighs any side effects, I would definitely recommend it to those suffering from extremely bad arthritis. F 21 3 years

4  Ulcerative Colitis Very tired the day of the injection, slight headache for 1-2 days, some joint pain, weight gain My UC is under control, only had one minor flare up. Totally off Prednisone. I make sure I get rest the day of my injection and treat everything else symptomatically. Need to do something about the weight gain, that's a little worrisome. F 50 8 weeks

3  Crohn's Humira-induced psoriasis Humira controls my Crohn's 100%. I have had severe reactions to purinethol and 5-ASA, and Humira really changed my life. However, a month and a half into treatment, psoriasis appeared mostly in my hands, under my feet and on my scalp and eventually got pretty bad. I have loss a substential amount of hair, I have bald patches all over my scalp, not sure if it is from the psoriasis or Humira. As of this week, the doctor suggested spacing out the doses to once every three weeks. Hope it will allow psoriasis lesions to clear. I have topical corticosteroids and tar preparations to help with the psoriasis, but I am not impressed with their effectiveness. If anyone experienced something similar, please email me, I would be interested into reading about other options or on how to cope with all of this. F 32 4 months

5  Ulcerative colitis I had an infected mosquito bite. Turned into a real skin infection not really that bad but lasted 2 months. I am SUPER tired for 3-5 days after my injection. I have a life again. I can eat. I don't worry about what or where or if Im gonna have to have a BM. I cant even remember the last time I had pain. Which was a daily thing for years. I gained 35 lbs! I did remicade and had serum sickness. As I told my GI doc- yeah I only poop once a day- but I can't walk! Remicade didn't work nearly as well. So glad I got a reaction. I LOVE Humira. Hate to think that I will have to requalify every year (per my current insurance). Hate to think that I might flare again someday. This is the first respite I have had from my disease. F 44 3 months

5  plaque psoriasis Some hair loss, 15lbs. weight gain My head was covered in psoriasis. It covered approx. 30% of my body. It has cleared me 99%. I dont like to inject my legs as they are very sore for a couple of days and I walk alot. But for the most part.. I have done extremely well on this drug. Aside from the weight gain, I am very happy with my results. As another poster stated, not every drug is for everyone. It took me 4 years and many many many drugs to agree to inject myself. I am glad I made the decision to try it. F 42 2 years

4  plaque psoriasis injection site reaction, goes away within hours This medication has worked wonders and has eliminated my psoriasis completely. Though I did experience a brief outbreak of severe psoriasis while on medication, not sure quite why that happened. Humira says it could have been a bad batch (since it must be kept cold). This has improved my life 100% and I am no longer embarrassed about my skin!! When I go off it for as little as 2 weeks I notice some spots coming back. Otherwise no adverse side effects.
