HUMIRA  (ADALIMUMAB):  Adalimumab is used to reduce pain and swelling due to certain types of arthritis (such as rheumatoid, psoriatic, juvenile idiopathic, ankylosing spondylitis). This medication is also used to treat certain skin disorders (such as plaque-type psoriasis, hidradenitis suppurativa). It works by blocking a protein (tumor necrosis factor or TNF) found in the body's immune system that causes joint swelling and damage in arthritis as well as red scaly patches in psoriasis. Adalimumab belongs to a class of drugs known as TNF blockers. By reducing joint swelling, this medication helps to reduce further joint damage and preserve joint function. Adalimumab is also used to treat certain bowel conditions (Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis) and a certain eye disease (uveitis).    (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

5  autoimmune reaction disorder I was on Enbrel, which does the same thing: suppresses immune system. In my case autoimmune overreacts to foods (gluten/casseinate mostly). It works very well. I don't hardly notice a reaction to foods. I'm not supposed to be eating those foods, & that's the bad part...I've been slipping & eating those foods again b/c I can get away with it without pain. Today, in the news there was a new study that says Humira causes 3 times cancer than placebo. Great. I'm not happy about being on the drug, but it does make it so I don't feel bad... and I was feeling bad even when my diet was clean. There's a new drug that is supposed to be on the way called Zonulin. Going thru another human trial now. Alba Pharmaceuticals in MD. Sposed to work differently for this sort of problem. Sposed to stop the gluten from getting thru spaces in mucosal intestinal wall. It sounds very promising!! Apparently, this is related to just about all auto immune issues. F 48 1 months

1  severe Rheumatoid arthritis Eleven [11] days after my first injection of humira I developed a huge swelling at the injection site, and a full body very itchy rash which took me to the ER, i had to take a lot od steroids for a long time [3 months], as well as Tagamet and Benedryl. It took two weeks for the rash to clear up but as the drug is long lasting in your system I was in steroids for 3 months. Not enough data, not enough testing and info. I subsequently developed diabetes from the steroids and NO ONE can tell me why the reaction began 11 days post injection. F 61 1 days

2  rheumatoid arthritis 13 days after first and only injection, developed red rash all over, starting at the injection site. Will see my doctor to determine whether to continue injections.. I only had one injection, and I can't really tell if it helped or not. I was diagnosed 1 1/2 years ago and Plaquenil keeps me virtually pain-free. F 50

4  psoriatic arthritis No side effects other than mild injection site redness and itch. Dose escalated to weekly injections. Helps but still doesn't take all the pain away. Good control of skin lesions, arthritc pain better but not gone. I will continue as the benefit seems to get better the longer I take it. Been in the clinical trial for about a year now. F 51 1 years

4  Arthritis Nasuea and Headache--Little tired the day following injection! After nine weeks, I am feeling better. The first few injections were really tough; however, it definitely gets easier! The side effects verses other TNF blockers seem mild. Give it a try! F 29

3  rheumatoid arthritis (13 years) drug site reaction (rash, itching), random aches in bones (not necessarily joints) all over my body, fluish symptoms after injection. After 5 weeks, I noticed some improvement in my joint pain. HOWEVER, I've been taking Humira for 6 weeks now, have had 3 colds, 1 sinus infection. On Enbrel, which I took for 20 months, I didn't have one cold or flu. Humira really seems to knock one's immunal defenses down. My doctor's considering putting me back on Enbrel. F 43 6 weeks

3  Psoriatic Arthritis Side effects include: injection site bump, itching, redness, (last injection created a bruise on my stomache for a week). Mental confusion at times, most notably when typing or reading, mental accuity seems reduced. Cant seem to kick this chest cold either. After 8 weeks, Doc decided to try it weekly instead of every other week. Joint pain exists in ankle an knee, along with swelling and tenderness. This is the first drug ive ever tried for the PA. Seems to have improved, slowly, but some improvement seen. The Psoriatic Arthritis seems to come in waves, attacking every few days, then recedes, then im back to limping again. Very frustrating.  4  Severe Psoriatic & Rhuem Arthritis Due to insurance issues (lack of) this is my second round of Humira. I am on it and Methotrexate after being on MTX alone. Side effects seem to be brain fog like that from Fibromyalgia. I have also had severe gasto issues from time to time even when taking Humira alone. When taking Humira it seems to make Psoriatic Blistering much worse for a few days after the injection. In time it will clear the blistering. I do not have issues with psoriatic plaques but assume it would benifit there as well. I take it weekly and this round I am at about week #5. I have found that the pre loaded dose pack burns very bad. When I change it to a 1cc sub q needle it is easier to inject but still burns as it is just part of the medication. When on it before it helped with mobility after 8 - 12 weeks. I believe it would have helped with pain beyond that had I not lost insurance. Feel free to email. I am 33 and retired because of this disease with nothing much to do anyway. M 6 weeks

5  ankylosis spondilits, reiters nausea, fatigue, severe dehydration, anxiety, irritability I would not beable to walk or turn my neck without humira. I had constant swollen knees (100cc of fluid would have to be drained from my knees)and my back was so stiff I could not move. It has quieted the uvietis in my left eye. The side effects are no fun but are easier to tolerate than the disease. F 51 3 days

3  Rheumatoid Arthritis Fatigue. Weight gain. Infections from injections. Hasn't help with psorisis. Headaches. I suffered from a prolonged flare last year. Humira I must say stopped the flare and then was able to get out of bed easier in the mornings. I don't like injections. I also take Methotrexate & Arava. F 36 4 months

3  Crohn's Disease EXTREME Fatigue, nausea, vomiting, burning at injection site, mental fogginess, secondary MRSA infection - Loading dose 4 pens I developed a MRSA infection on my left tib-fib the week after my loading dose. My Monocyte counts were cut in half - this is not something to play with. Crohn's symptons saw improvement and my second dose (2 pens) is this evening. Symptoms of Crohn's return after about 1.5 weeks - don't know if one pen every two weeks will be worth the hassle when my symptoms don't abate for the whole two weeks. We'll see . . . F 30 14 days

1  Rheumatoid arthritis After receiving the 3rd injection I began to develop a rash on my right arm, from there I developed a very severe itchy rash from head to toe; I though I had a severe case of the chicken pox which I did not. I could not go out in the sun because it would cause unbearable severe itching. This medicine caused permanent scars and dark marks all over my body. It has been 3 yrs and I still have a slight area that has not quite healed. I spend 6 months with little sleep because of the unbearable itching and severe depression. A dermatologist had to try various medicines to finally control it. I had never had a reaction to any medicines until I took Humira. It was like a horrible nightmare. I would hate for anyone else to go thru what I did. It may work for others but it caused severe damage to my skin. I just shiver whenever I here the word Humira. I am now on Methotrexate and Remicade and so far no rash. F 60 6 weeks

5  severe Rheumatoid Arthritis red, itchy mosquito-like bumps that always appear in a set of 3's. they appear a day or two after my humira injection & go away in a few days. they itch very much. other side effects may include skin very itchy & sensitive to sun, and possibly heightened overall tiredness. humira shots were very difficult to get used to, and i was very scared for awhile, making it almost impossible, but immediately after the 1st shot i felt 80% better. here are some other things that have helped make injections easier for me...ice on the injection site till it's red, letting the shot sit out for at least 20 min's, injecting into my abdomen rather than thigh, my wonderful fiance standing by my side everytime encouraging me, and good ole breathing.  5  RA I cannot seem to loose weight, despite careful dieting, low fat foods, and gentle exercise. And my sleeping is bad, lack of it. I seem to be prone to fungal and bacterial infections now, but I do feel 100% better taken it. M 46 3 years

5  Rheumatoid Arthritis No side effects. Slight burning sensation during injection. It began working about 6 weeks after starting. I take it every two weeks along with methotrexate taken weekly. One of the best medications I've ever taken in terms of effectiveness. M 62 4 years

4  Psoriatic Athritis & Psoriasis Slight backache starting right before 3rd shot. A little sluggish in thought sometimes. Strong stinging sensation at injection site, during and immediately following injection. I am currently on my 3rd shot of Humira, and felt immediate results the next day after the very first shot! 90% of my Psoriatic Athritis pain went away, allowing me to function normally for the first time in years. Has not cleared up my scalp psoriasis whatsoever. A slight backache has only recently developed. Am unsure if this is connected to the medication. I do lose my train of thought more and more it seems, but unsure that is connected to medication either. I also take Ambien, for sleep issues, and zoloft as a pain blocker. Humira, in conjuction with the ambien, has 90% cured me of pain, and allowed me to begin to rebuild my life. However, I wish it would help more with the scalp/skin issues, and am hoping as I take the shot longer ( once every two weeks). F 29 6 weeks

5  Rheumatoid Arthritis I feel tired the day of injection (I take it early in the am). If I inject on my leg, a red bump lasting 2 - 3 weeks appears which is mildly itchy. I have much more energy, and can get out of bed in the morning with no pain. I am also on methotrexate, and I think this combination is helping me significantly. F 39 8 weeks

5  CROHNS I have only experienced injection site reactions, which are much more tolerable than the disease. I tend to get moderate nausea suddenly. I get mild tingling sensations in fingers and toes. I have been using humira since Jan l, 07. I have not been able to tolerate any other treatment for my crohns disease other than predizone. I was sick of that. I would recommend to anyone. F 35 8 days
