| 5 | Depression (treatment-resistant) | Restlessness (improved w/ Vitamin B6 and Ambien), acne and dry skin/hair (improved w/ B6 and regular skin regimen), enhanced libido, weight gain. | Best medication I've ever t*ken. Currently combined with dextroamphetamine, which has not caused any hypertensive crises at all. Doctors are far too ignorant and afraid of MAOIs. | F | 26 | 3 years | 1/13/2010 | 5 | treat. resist. depress. for 27yrs | Life saving, restored libido, some side effects like any antidepressant, but Parnate is life giving without side effects of Nardil (more sedating via Gaba, took Nardil for over 10 years). Reserve Nardil for second choice. Hypertensive and serotonin syndrome way over rated but can happen. | Ask me what you want. I've had severe treatment resistant depression (along with anxiety, lots of somatic symptoms) since 15y/o and currently am 42y/o. I had about 80 ECT's at 18y/o and 19y/o without success and have tried over 50 psychotherapeutic drugs without success. I still can have my "not the best days", however, Parnate give me life. and all other MAOIA (not the new "RIMA") Deep Brain Stimulation, I believe, will be the cure all. | M | 42 | 1 years | 11/19/2009 | 5 | depression, bipolar II | Nausea and other digestive issues at first, but they went away after a few weeks. Lost weight, and have increased energy and desire to do anything (even exercise). | The reviews from many others at this website are true, and I believe this drug will work long term. Fall has been an especially tough time for me in the past, and so far this year no problems. I had to talk my pych. into using this drug (she was scared), but 11 years on SSRI's,Tricyclics, etc did little to help me. | M | 45 | 4 months | 11/14/2009 | 4 | None of the SSRI's have worked | I'm having muscle weakness, pain and joint pain, especially at night when I try to go to sleep. Also need a pill to help me sleep. Has anyone else had this muscle and joint problem? | I do feel better after trying the SSRI's for 25 years! | F | 61 | 4 months | 9/22/2009 | 5 | Atypical Depression and Anxiety | Sometimes a bloated feeling, especially with dairy products; insomnia (trouble both falling asleep and staying asleep) with "crashes" maybe every 6 weeks or so, where I sleep for 12-16 hours a night for 2 or 3 days. | Parnate really saved my life. I'm able to hold down a job and interact with people and life in a marginally normal way. I still have some anxiety, and there are spells when it doesn't seem to work. I notice that some people on this site have had success with Klonopin for sleep and anxiety issues, so maybe I will talk to my doctor about that. I wish I'd discovered this ten years earlier. | M | 35 | 2.7 years | 7/16/2009 | 2 | Major Depression (16yrs) | Irritability, anger, aggressiveness, euphoria that felt like it bordered on manic, reduced appetite (forgetting to eat sometimes), vertigo, mild nausea, reduced sleep (5 1/2 hours), 'strangeness' in personal interractions - missing cues, making unconnected responses. Chest pain during exercise initially. Increased bowel activity in the morning (usally two evacuations within an hour), excessive urination in the mornings, after two cups of tea. Improved ejaculation (over tricyclics). Sour stomach. | My old tricyclic cocktail (Dothep & Tofranil) was causing arrhythmias so Dr. wanted me to change. I thought Tetracyclic, but Psychiatrist suggested MAOI, but let me choose which one (strangely). I chose parnate for less toxic nature of side effects over Nardil. Psychiatrist usually suggests Nardil for being less stimulating. No great food interractions. Have eaten chees and avovcado with no ill effects. Good quality chocolate now puts me to sleep, and milk, up until recently, has helped extend my sleep up to 8 hrs. Coffee makes me manic/euphoric so now drink tea. However depression has broken through. Taking even 1/8th of a pill above 10mg increases the irritability, anger and aggressiveness to an intolerable level. I will be coming off these as soon as my my daughter's 21st birthday later this month is over. Only Tetracyclics and moclobemide left of antidepressants I haven't tried. If they don't work then it may be back to the tricyclics and onto heart drugs. Oh joy oh bliss. | M | 52 | 9 weeks | 5/12/2009 | 1 | Depression | Sex headaches, inability to exercise, hair loss, nervousness, flat affect, RAVENOUS INSATIABLE HUNGER, weight gain, memory loss, cognition decline, headaches, inability to focus. | I took three of two pills and had potent side effects for the next 3-4 months. | F | 23 | 2 days | 4/30/2009 | 4 | major depression | Initally none really to speak of - biggest difference: no more headaches. Now, having swelling and weight gain. Could tell a huge difference between brand v generic. | Am on 5 tablets, 3 at breakfast 2 at lunch...worked up to this dose. Have bouts of extreme tiredness and can't keep my eyes open. Sleeping ok when I can get to sleep, can get up easier in morning even after only a couple of hours. Most trouble some is NO WEIGHT LOSS - WEIGHT GAIN and swelling now of hands, feet and face. I feel like that little girl who ate the blueberries in Willy Wonka! After being on MAOI's forever this was supposed to be a miracle drug. Emotionally, I give it a 9, physically a negative 10. | F | 42 | 3 months | 4/24/2009 | 5 | chronic depression | dry mouth, feeling cold (went away) water retention (minor) manic behaviour on higher doses, can't drink coffee or alcohol without getting headaches or nausea | I started with 3x 10mg tabs per day. Worked like a charm, but had an immediate loss of appetite, vertigo, and manic behaviour. A year later tapered off to 2 per day. Five years later levelled off to 1x10mg. per day, and that's where I am right now. On rare occasions I feel the need for an extra dose, but this happens maybe once or twice a year. I had tried mannerix about 15 years ago since a new doctor thought parnate had too many interactions. That lasted about 3 weeks and it was very difficult for me because it did nothing for me. I was relieved to get back on the parnate. I was also relieved when I found this website and read other people's reports. I thought I was one of very few left taking the drug. I'm always worried they will take it off the market. Now I see there are many other users. For me it is a wonder drug. | F | 58 | 33 years | 3/23/2009 | 5 | severe depression and anxiety | Some gastrointestinal to begin with but after that only good side effects such as unimagined energy and interest in life - but no sleep. Also lost weight as I lost my appetite - a real bonus. I always put on weight on anti depressants. | I have had an awful endogenous depression for about 6 years. Have tried everything. I have been on tricyclics most of the time as SSRIs just don't work for me. I just decided after 4 years of tricyclics with no real improvement wasn't good enough and looked around for something else. I was a bit nervous about the alleged side effects of the MAOIs and dire warnings about diet but in the end found that I just needed to avoid red wine and vast amounts of dark chocolate (milk is fine). It was like a miracle cure! I was able to get out of bed, work 12 hour days, be interested in life, rarely had obsessive dark thoughts. The only down side was that I only slept one or 2 hours a night and that was with pills but I was never tired. Parnate was like low level speed. I loved it! After about 4 months I crashed from the lack of sleep and my doctor said to reduce the dose from 30mg to 20mg. 25mg would have been ideal but they don't come in that dose and the pills are coated so cannot be broken in ha | F | 52 | 4 months | 3/12/2009 | 5 | Major Depression | When I first started to take parnate, I would faint at any time. I really did have to watch myself. That has passed. I feel much better on parnate than any other drug I tried. It did save my life. | M | 60 | 1 years | 2/12/2009 | 4 | Treatment-Resistant Depression | Insomnia above 30 or 40 mg per day. | In my experience, Parnate is much more effective than the more commonly prescribed modern antidepressants, but you must obey the dietary and medication restrictions to avoid serious medical problems. Also check your blood pressure regularly. Get to the ER quickly with your Parnate pharmacy info sheet if you get a severe headache or other significant symptoms (that your doctor can explain). You should wear a medical alert bracelet or neck pendant (engraved as your doctor says with something like "Taking Parnate"), or carry a yellow or orange medication card while wearing the bracelet or pendant. (You can get these at some pharmacies or online.) Also tell your dentist that you are taking Parnate, since it can cause have serious interactions with certain anesthetics. This may sound a little scary, but it is worth it if the other meds don't work for you. If you want to recover from depression, the medication is only a first step. You must also greatly simplify your life and m | M | 45 | 7 months | 2/8/2009 | 3 | Major Depression | Hair loss, always cold, low blood pressure, sun sensitivity. | Has kept my moods more level than other drugs but I feel flat or empty inside. I hate the diet restrictions and the fact that my hair continues to fall out. | F | 36 | 3 years | 1/29/2009 | 5 | depression-major | none | it has been a wonder drug for me! literally saved my life | M | 56 | 6 years | 1/24/2009 | 4 | Depression & ADHD | First course - None at all Second course - daytime drowsiness, so much so that i started taking naps for the first time in my life at the age of 23. | Parnate was probably the best antidepressant i have taken. It is strong, but lifted me out of a deep dark place in my life. I took the first course for a few months, and 2 years later took a second course, again for a few months. The second time i took it, i found it wasn't as good as the first - drowsiness was a new side-effect, which i really don;t like. I've never had problems with the food interactions, not sure why. Ate 3 day old lasagna with blue cheese, not even a headache. I DON'T recommend this to anyone, but if you really miss cheese maybe take a little, and if no headache, work your way up?... | M | 23 | 9 months | 12/15/2008 | 5 | Severe depression | None | Parnate has saved my life. I have tried many medicines for depression but none worked like Parnate does. Once you understand the food restriction you will do well. It helped that I didn't drink, and I don't eat pigs feet. I do miss taking OT for colds. But compaired to depression I will live thru a cold. My doctor agrees that Parnate has made the difference between day and night for me in how I view life. | F | 65 | 30 years | 12/6/2008 | 4 | Depression | Dry mouth, some difficulty sleeping. | This isn't the miracle drug for me that it was for others, but it was able to give me a little lift where SSRIs weren't. It's tough not being able to eat cheese, but overall it's worth it. (Can still eat mozzarella and American cheese.) I take 0.5 mg ambien for sleeping but can only take 5x/week to prevent dependence so the weekends can be a little tough for sleeping. | F | 53 | 2 years | 11/19/2008 | 5 | depression/ social anxiety | At first, vertigo (went away), weight loss (Okay by me), sleeplesness | I've tried every antidepressant imaginable, nothing seemed to work. I take 3 tablets a day (10 mgs.) a day. To help with the insomnia, I first tried ambien, which didn't work for me for some reason. My doctor put me on Klonopin 1 or 2 as needed to help with anxiety and sleeplesness (But only at bed time!). I feel that the combination of these two medications is life saver! Also, I've lost 15 lbs. since starting the pills:) I actually want to get out of bed and do things now!:) Highly recommended!! | F | 31 | 3 weeks | 9/24/2008 | 5 | depression | I have been on Parnate (starting at 5mg,10mg,15mg, and now have leveled off) It is the first anti depressant that has worked in fifteen years. I have lost 70 pounds. I do notice a rapid heartbeat, my pulse has increased a bit. Coffee seems to interact after one cup. My doctor would like to switch from Ambien to Klonepin and was addicted to that drug three years ago. He says different anti-depressants work with vs against klonepin. Any comments? I have no cravings for sugar or carbs as I did with the newer anti-depressants. The weight simply came off. I find it a strong, but lifesaving drug. concerned about the pulse and ambien. Still anxiety.. | F | 54 | 150 days | 9/14/2008 | 4 | atypical bipolar depression, PTSD | Insomnia, muddy thinking?, "flatness", memory problems?, initial weight gain, frustration w/dietary restrictions, had to correct nutritional deficiencies due to change in diet from mostly vegetarian. | After 17 years on mostly lithium and Zoloft with no hospitalizations, I suffered some personal losses and consequent severe depression in 2004. For 2 years I tried other meds and had bad doctors, wound up on Parnate for "atypical" reasons. Insomnia was helped by a dx of sleep apnea, and had lots of therapy. I hate the food restrictions but don't know whether it's worth getting off Parnate and going back to an SSRI/SNRI with all the risks involved and possibly losing some of what I've worked so hard to recover. I welcome comments. | F | 42 | 1.5 years | 8/31/2008 | 5 | depression | low blood pressure and sleepiness (these happen sometimes after my final dose wears off- it happens to a lesser degree now that I've been on parnate for a year) | Great antidepressant! IMO should be prescribed much more often. I feel much happier w/this than every ssri I took. It also lessons social anxiety for me. It doesn't (for me) have the awful sexual side effects that ssris had. It hasn't caused any weight gain. | F | 40 | 1 years | 8/30/2008 | 3 | clinical depression | horrible taste in mouth all the time | Started Tranylcypromine (UK name)30mg/daily 2 months ago, still waiting for it to kick in. I agree with the comments about being 'dull'. A friend said I looked sadder than usual. I suppose he meant the same thing. Being very cautious about food, lost loads of weight as a result! Being your own cook/baker does help, you know everything in your shopping basket. Wouldn't describe it in the ecstatic terms some reveiews have used, unless of course, when it does kick in... | M | 44 | 8/17/2008 | 5 | Depression | Insomnia | Lifesaving drug. Nothing else (tricyclics, SSRIs) has anything like it efficacy. Although it is viewed as 'old fashioned' I think it should be used more. The side effects, though real, are exaggerated and harmless. This is one of those drugs that actually works. | M | 50 | 25 years | 7/23/2008 | 5 | Severe Atypical depression | If I take Parnate after 4pm, I get a strange and agitated sleep. This is helped by taking 1/4 a clonazepam (or of course by not forgetting to take the tablet!). Also, sometimes I get anxiety if I take the tablets (im on 40mg) too close together, or without food. But all of these pale in comparison to the depression I had!! Dry mouth sometimes. | This drug quite literally saved my life. I had been on 13 different antidepressants, in various combinations, for three years. None of them worked, hence my diagnosis of severe atypical treatment resistant depression (whew, what a title!). The "atypical" bit came about because i put on weight (lots of it) rather than lost it, my depression was MUCH worse at night rather than during the day, and I wasnt particularly melancholic. As a last resort I researched drugs myself and read about parnate. THe Dr initially refused to put me on it, but relented after significant pressure from me. Within one week most of my "depression" had gone (though the aftereffects of living with depression for 3 years without remission took a lot longer to overcome), and I was back to normal. I was initially on 20mgs (the max dose in new zealand where i live), and it stopped working after about 3 months. THe dr put me up to 40, and i was fine for 3 years. Then dr asked me to go down | F | 30 | 5 years | 6/9/2008 | 5 | Treatment resistant depression | This drug has had the longest efficacy (2+ years) of anything I've taken. The dietary restrictions are really not so bad--so long as you eat most of your meals at home. Restaurants tend to put cheese in everything! I've had some problems with insomnia and urinary retention, but the relief from depression is worth almost any side-effect. | A couple of points: (1) One very interesting strategy that my doctor has suggested, which has worked four times when Parnate started to "poop out". At his suggestion, I have tapered off very rapidly (3-4 days) gone without the drug for a week, and quickly tapered up to the old dose (60 mg/day. I have never heard of this idea before, but it has worked extremely well for me. (Noting that everyone is different, and one should do this only under MD direction.) (2) At age 63, I wonder if I should be increasing the dose. I've read that dopamine falls off rapidly with age, and I think that in my case the dopamine increase may be a major feature of the drug. I will consult my MD on this. | M | 63 | 2 years | 5/23/2008 | 4 | chronic depression & severe anxiety | dry mouth, headaches (w/o high BP), loss of appetite, heart palpitations, often cold (went way), water retention, agitation (went away) | I was *severely* depressed when I started parnate; after about 3 weeks and a dose of 30mg/day I felt better for about a week... now I feel like I'm "sliding backwards," don't want to get out of bed in the morning, don't want to leave my house, less energy. I'm going up to 40mg, hoping this will help because SSRI's are pretty useless for me. For the week that I did feel better it was a big improvement... so maybe a higher does will do the trick. | F | 30 | 25 days | 5/1/2008 | 5 | Panic Attacks, Anxiety, Depression | I have been taking it for so long I cannot remember but it was the only medicine I took that did not have nasty or long lasting side affects like other medicines. Of course the only thing you have to watch is certain foods, OTC products and if you have surgery. You will be able to determine what you can or cannot eat over time. I would recommend getting a Blood Pressure kit just to be safe. | The only medicine that worked for my symptoms quickly(within a few weeks)and I tried alot of different meds before Parnate. After 25 years of taking this medicine I just had my first panic attack My new doctor said that my body is now just metabolizing the medicine in my body faster and I have to increase my dosage from 5 tabs to 6 tabs and possibly 7 tabs on an very other day basis. I was thinking about switching to a "new" medicine but the Dr. said there is not one better than this. As for all you who have problems trying to sleep at night on Parnate, I would recommend talking to your doctor about Klonopin. I have been taking a .25mg 1/2tab for 25 years and never have had a problem with sleeping. Plus you get the added benefit that Klonopin also helps with Panic and Anxiety. Alot of Doctors will not subscribe Klonopin for use over a long period of time because some people can abuse this drug and get addicted to it. If your not an addictive type person I would recommend | F | 50 | 25 years | 4/28/2008 | 1 | depression anxiety | Insomnia, daytime tiredness | After really hoping this medication would work and getting my hopes up I am really dissatisfied. One thing I notice is a temporary relief for about one three hours after I take the pill. But I don't feel happy, just numb, but my anxiety is less. I feel sort of zombie like on this med. My personality is much duller and my moods are very uneven depending on when I take the pill. | F | 14 days | 4/12/2008 | 5 | depression | I do have a rapid heartbeat when I take it ( 50 mg) which is in the morning. But I take propanalol for that. I have no problems with food restrictions. Just be careful with cold medications with a decongestant, demerol, etc. Even surgery is no problem if you alert anesthesiologist to what you are taking. They know what do do, they've had to treat patients in the ER that were on Parnate. It is the best drug I have had and really the only one that worked for me. My only problem is that it's very very hard to fall asleep without help, like Ambien. But after years, the side effects of Ambien ( vivid nightmares) have made me try all kinds of behavioral changes. | I wish I knew what to do about the sleeplessness problem. The only time I really feel tired is around 4 in the afternoon. I've stopped talking a nap, hoping that would help later on. | F | 65 | 25 years | 2/17/2008 | 5 | Chronic depression. | NONE! | It is the first antidepressant that helped me for any period of time at all. I was tried on many before making a serious suicide attempt in 2004. In the hospital I was put on 60mg of Parnate, plus Seroquel. I now take 70mg. Miraculously, none of the prohibited foods affect me at all--red wine, cheese, all ok, but that is very unusual. (I've now had some serious personal losses and am thinking of taking more--does anyone know about that? | F | 65 | 4 years | 2/14/2008 | 3 | chronic depression | daily drowsiness and lethargy, but insomnia if taken at night, tingling goosebumps feelings, fast hearbeat | I have taken 50mg parnate (generic tranylcypromine) and 50mg lamictal for depression ever since I got out of the psych hospital around 6 months ago. My depression seems to have gotten much better after starting these drugs, but unfortunately it is difficult to tell which drug is responsible for my improvement. The side effects from both of these drugs are quite bothersome. Parnate causes me to be very drowsy and lethargic during the day and I often need to lay down and rest for a few hours, but if I take it at night or in the afternoon, I can't sleep. | M | 20 | 6 months | 1/16/2008 | 4 | treatment-resistent depression | I have already rated parnate but I am now experiencing a new side effect I thought I would share, insomnia. | I was taking serquel at the time of my last rating and since then it I became to tolerant of it, I them moved on to a few more but nothing works for more then a night or 2. It seems they stimulants in parnate prevent me from sleeping days on end. It is not awful though because I do not feel tired, and as long as its a 'good day' I enjoy the peaceful night (how long it is healthy to go without sleep though I am not sure). My doctor doesn't seem to have any suggestions either. right now i'm taking 30 mg dalmane, it worked well (TOO WELL) for the first 2 days but then I became tolerant. When reading about it I read it was used for extreme insomnia and not to expect it to work for me then a week before tolerance builds up so I guess even the doctor is grasping as straws. | F | 19 | 8 months | 8/7/2007 | 5 | treatment-resistent depression | light headed, fainted very often in the beginning, sensitive to a lot of sun, no appetite for a few days | Started parnate at 30mg (10mg 3x a day) felt better right away for about a week and a half, then back to how i was before. Once I got to about 40mg and had been taking it 2months and added topamax, and seraquel to sleep I felt world better. I have tried almost every anti depressent and this is the first one to have any effect what so ever good or bad. It is amazing I think. Their have been articles stating if other antidepressants don't work you usallly need a rather high dose a parnate (maybe even up to 100mg a day - very high for parnate) depending on your size. I now am at 60mg and probably won't go higher because of size but it aboslutly amazing- i am finally starting to leave the house, slowly beginning to communicate with people again. i suggest parnate! | F | 19 | 120 days | 6/22/2007 | 4 | depression | dry mouth, agitation, decreased appetite, colder than usual, initial insomnia (goes away), craving for sweet foods (does not go away), extreme fatigue in afternoon, constipation. | Works for depression. Not a "happy pill," but it evens out my moods and prevents panic attacks and sporadic weeping. However, tends to dull the personality a bit. | F | 38 | 3 years | 5/21/2007 | 5 | I went into major depression | the key to reducing side effects is to start with a low dose and work up gradually to a therapudic dose. I do not have side effects if I am careful with the dosage, and careful not to eat the foods that I know are my triggers. Msg. is a bad one. | I have taken Parnate for 30 years. I will never forget my initial response to the medication. It was like waking from a bad dream and I said "where have I been" My only quandry is what to do before major surgery. | F | 61 | 30 years | 5/20/2007 | 5 | MAJOR DEPRESSION AND ADHD | SOME HEADACHE IN P.M., RAISED PULSE RATE P.M., BOTH POSSIBLY FOOD RELATED | MY LIFE BEGAN AFTER I STARTED TAKING PARNATE, AFTER 16 YEARS OF TRYING SO MANY MEDS AND COMBINATIONS,AND A PURE TORTURED EXISTENCE,I FINALLY FEEL LIKE A NORMAL PERSON. I AM SO RELIEVED. | F | 45 | 8 months | 4/24/2007 | 5 | Severe depression | weight gain and loss of libido and unsteady walk. | Saved my life and now life is a joy. | M | 75 | 7 years | 4/24/2007 | 5 | severe depression and anxiety | weight gain, blurred vision in the evening | Parnate saved my life 13 years ago. They tried other antidepressants on me and as a last resort gave me Parnate. It was a miracle drug. I got my life back. You just have to be responsible and take it as prescribed. DO NOT listen to anyone who thinks you should be off of it, like massage, healing work, health food experts, EVEN FRIENDS AND FAMILY etc. They have no idea what the world is like for you without parnate. I had a bad accident and was given many pain drugs which caused a chemical inbalance when I was taken off of them. I couldn't cope with anything, was severly depressed and had horrible"jump out of your skin" anxiety. Within three months or less of taking parnate my biggest fear was it would not keep working because I felt like a normal person again. As I said that was 13 years ago. I am still taking parnate 40mg a day. I also did a lot of research on parnate and the one thing that has always stayed in my mind was a statement in one book 'PARNATE ALWAYS WORKS.&qu | F | 54 | 13 years | 3/30/2007 | 5 | Depression; over sleep & overeat | Dry mouth occasionally, and I believe, heart palpitations. I have experienced increased sexual desire and it works in 24 hours. In all the years that I've been taking it, I've had only 2 episodes because of food. I can have a little white wine or champagne; fresh cheeses; and I drink decaf anyway. For colds, I use the menthol breathe right strips and Vicks Vaporub to keep my head clear. And I stay at home and stay in bed. It's probably a good idea to wear a medic alert bracelet--which I plan to get. | I've been taking the drug since 1979, but usually was on it for about 1-2 years and then was off (I had a depression every 7 years). But this time around, I've been on it for about 5 years. My doctor says that I'll probably stay on it because as you get older...you may need it more. I'm on 40 mg a day; my highest dosage was 50 mgs. I didn't even want to try another drug because this one works and works fast. And my psychiatrist still feels that this is the right drug for me. | F | 59 | 5 years | 3/26/2007 | 1 | atypical depression | I was one of the UNlucky few who experienced the dreaded MAOI hypertensive crisis. I was very careful with the diet. My best guess is that peanut butter was the culprit - excessive peanuts are on the eat with caution list, but not forbidden. I might just be more susceptible than most. The H/C was the worst experience of my life and landed me in the local trauma center. Started with a MAJOR headache (the type where you consider throwing yourself in front of a train to ease the pain). Blood pressure went off the scales. Took two weeks to fully recover. Be forewarned - these MAOI hypertensive crises can and do happen. | I was just getting to the maintenance dose when I had the hypertensive crisis. The drug was actually working very well up to that point and I was hopeful that I finally found one that was going to work. If only this could be designed without the tyramine issues!! | M | 43 | 3 weeks | 1/29/2007 | 5 | severe depression | Always cold, headaches sometimes, eventually stopped working after 20 years. | I took this miracle drug for 20 years and was convinced to go off it to try newer antidepressants. It was a nightmare to withdraw from. If you are on it and wish to try other newer meds. DON'T. I've tried them all and am going back to Parnate. If you can manage the food restrictions, it is WORTH IT. Don't mess with a good thing. AND... If you are hesitant to take an MAO... go for it! If nothing else works... you will know what "real life" is like. | F | 50 | 20 years | 12/28/2006 | 5 | clinical (major) depression | Insomnia, delay of orgasm. Possibly intolerant/agressive sometimes (but maybe after lifetime as a virtual 'doormat', just flexing muscles). | In brief: Parnate has given me a whole new life. My only great fear is that I may one day have to stop taing it, or that it will stop working. This drug, for me, has been like being reborn :) Fears that were crucifying me, I now laugh about. I feel I have become the person I was meant to be. | M | 55 | 5 years | 4/20/2006 | 5 | Major depression | Dificulty in ejaculating, loss of libido, became a bit aggressive and insensitive, so I'm told. | POWER drug. Parnate kicks ass. I've taken them all, and this one is in a different category. I took it for 12 years, and my life went from a sloppy mess to a LOT of fun. Parnate if you're a strong responder, and I was, comes on with an amphetimine like minor "rush," and you feel no fear or self doubt. It takes bedridden disasters and turns them into hitters. Love this shit, but it finally petered out on it. I'm waiting for selegiline to hit the shelves in a month or so. MAOI's rule!! | M | 57 | 12 years | 3/21/2006 | 4 | DEPPRESION | I HAVE DEVELOPED SIDE EFFECTS OF MUSCLE TENSION AND DISYNESS IN THE LAST FEW YEARS . I WAS HOPEING TO GET SOME FEEDBACK ON HOW THE NEWER SAFER MEDS WORK . | UNFORTUNATLY OLD SYMPTOMS ARE COMING BACK I WILL HAVE TO TRY ANOTHER ONE OR GO BACK TO PARNATE | M | 50 | 18 years | 2/17/2006 | 5 | unipolar major depression | At the beginning only --hypotension, dry mouth weight gain, craving for carbohydrates. Ongoing--reduced need for sleep (not insomnia | I've been taking this drug for 20 (TWENTY) YEARS and it has always been a lifesaver, in knocking out my symptoms of depression. | M | 56 | 20 years | 5/9/2005 | 5 | Sever Non-responsive depression | Trouble sleeping at night, food restrictions or else severe migraine with blood pressure shooting up, dizziness & very occasional fainting (learned to stand up slowly and eat regularly). | It's not an easy drug to take, at high dose I have to take it 3xday and watch what I eat. But, after trying many other drugs over the years, nothing has helped as much. I am not 100%, but I am much better than I have been for over 20 years. | F | 37 | 4 years | 5/8/2005 | 5 | Major depressive disorder | loss of libido, sleeplessness, perception difficulties (bump into things with my hips), some difficulty | This drug is a miracle and saved my life. For the first time, I feel like a human being after many years of suffering and trying almost all other drugs and ECT. I would probably be dead without Parnate. I take 100 mg. daily. | F | 51 | 13 months | 5/8/2005 | 5 | Bi-Polar Type 2 | Insomnia, afternoon fatigue, weight gain, altered depth perception, sensitivity to heat, increased libido, leg weakness | For the first time in my life i am depression free. I love this med and find the diet is not at all restrictive. Very few things must be strictly avoided | F | 55 | 2 years | 5/8/2005 | 4 | Atypical depression | Sleeplessness. Also a profound fear of the | Very good med but the (welcome) alertness it give you disappears after a while. Am taking 40mg a day and want to go higher but my doc is very reluctant. | M | 48 | 6 months | 12/27/2004 | 3 | atypical depression- | Helped lift depression. Severe dizzyness spells..Fell down a few times. Dizzyness pronounced while getting up from bed.. passing out spells | Taking fludrocortisone to help dizzyness.. Not sure how its all going to turn out. TRIED ALL SSRI before this one | M | 37 | 3 months | 12/24/2004 | 5 | Major Depression | Some insomnia at night. Afternoon sleepiness. | The only thing that's helped my depression. The dietary restrictions are, in my opinion, trivial, compared to the relief I've gotten. I'm not looking forward to my first cold/flu without the help of OTC drugs, but, again, how does that inconveniance compare with 15 years of horrible depression finally being lifted? | F | 28 | 2 months | 11/13/2004 | 4 | Depression | loss of libido, sleep disruption, MAOI diet restriction, afternoon fatigure attacks | very powerful AD, the libido loss & deep fatigue (lasting ~30 min-1 hr) in the afternoon and/or early evening, on top of the diet restrictions, ultimately led me to go off | M | 35 | 2 years | 10/26/2004 | 3 | bipolar depression | Have been on it for 15 yrs. and works well for depression. Have developed side effects of muscle tightness and dizzyness in the last few yrs. and have to switch. | This drug is difficult to switch off of if need be. As a MAOI it reguires 14 days off before another SSRI or SSNRI can be used. I would use one of the newer drugs. Good luck. | M | 59 | 15 years | 10/22/2004 | 4 | panic disorder | dry mouth, sleepines, some constipation | i have been on very long term but low dose of 20 mg a day. I take at bedtime so sleep through most side effects. No panic attacks on this med. | F | 43 | 20 years | 8/9/2004 | 4 | General Anxiety | Sleeplessness | Alcohol makes you very groggy | M | 40 | 45 days | 7/10/2004 | 5 | Anxiety | None. I just had to watch my diet. | Was on this for 18 years. Worked like a charm. After this time began to get irritable easily and it was decided to change meds. Currently on remeron, but not having much success. The old symptoms which I haven't experienced in 18 years are coming back. I feel if parnate had been invented after (instead of before) the SSRIs etc, it may have been viewed as an improvement. on them | M | 43 | 18 years | 4/23/2004 | 4 | severe long term depression | very low blood pressure | first anti-depressant that has had any effect on me at all | F | 48 | 1 years | 9/19/2003 | 1 | Depression | Too many to list, but some include weight gain, dry mouth, blurred vision and sexual problems. | I hate it. I am switching. | F | 34 | 90 days | 3/18/2003 | 5 | Major Deprtession | I am taking several meds so it is hard to say. Mostly dry mouth, constipation, and at first urinary hestancy. | F | 48 | 5 years | 2/28/2003 |
