5  depression extreme orthostatic hypotension It's so great I'm going to try it again perhaps along with an antihypotensive if neccessary so that I can get back up to therapeutic dosage for me. And mind you, I was in the hospital for ten days while they tried to figure out what was going on with me! F 54 8 weeks

5  depression-anxiety Sexual-Drousyness-Little bit hard to urinate-Weight gain. All were temperery except I had to diet to loose yhe weight gain. I have tried every type of antidepressant and have had severe mental side effects. With Nardil much improvement over deppression and anxiety attacts completely eliminated. I briefly stopped Nardil with almost no side effects to try Prosac. Same severe mental side effects as all other antidepressants. M 56 21 days

5  depression Went through many anti-depressants, with little therapeutic effect, then started Nardil with Lithium, and depression lifted. Had side effects that for the most part disappeared. Trouble sleeping at night, having to take a nap during the day. But nothing too bothersome. Plus, you do not develop tolerance to the medication, so you can take it indefinitely. F 55 22 years

3  Anxiety and social anxiety Immense weight gain (it took me 4 years to loose the weight successfully), dry mouth that lead to severe tooth decay, grinding of teeth in my sleep that caused my fillings to errode at a rapid pace, sexual side effects and emotional detachment issues that have been hard to overcome, and led to the failing of my 7 year partnership (I have been off the meds now since 1/2001 and when I went off, I went off cold turkey with no problems) If you need it, you need it! but try something else first! this is a last resort, especially considering the dietary restrictions of no cheese, wine, beer, or preserved anything... MAOI inhibiters are difficult to navigate with over the counter meds as well. F 36 5 years

5  Depression, anxiety Constipation, sleepiness, high BP, sexual probs Brilliant drug! Nothing beats it. Works so well, makes all s/effects worth it. When you take this drug properly it creates a health euphoric feeling. Brilliant! M 27 4 years

3  Depression Dose related extreme hypotensive episodes (abnormally low blood pressure leading to nausea, dizzines, almost passing out). Loss of libido. Sleep disturbances coupled with afternoon tiredness. It did help partially but I couldn't get to proper theraputic levels due to severe hypotension side effect. Too bad, because even at low levels it seemed to work as well as most other meds I've tried. Other than hypotension in my case the side effect profile was no worse than most others I've tried.  4  OCD depression Hassle with the special diet, no side effects to speak of (unlike SSRIs and the major sexual problems) Got a bit too high on the higher doses. Postural hypertension. Great for depression, helped a bit with the OCD . Been on SSRIs they're OK, but still remember the good times on Nardil !! Reluctant to return, as Nardil lowers blood pressure (can kill) and if the wrong food is eaten, makes the blood pressure dangerously high. M 45 10 years

3  Treatment resistant depression No real side effects. The diet is tricky, but not that terrible. It didn't help completely, but there is some improvement, the first in probably five or six years. F 31 14 months

2  depression very intense low blood pressure causing fainting, sleepiness...although i was taking a few other prescriptions with this drug (as prescribed by my doctor) it is possible that this caused tardive dyskinesia. intense sleepiness during the day for the first month, and sleeplessness at night for a year. i had to take other meds to help with the sleepiness/insomnia. the diet is very difficult. especially since i am a vegetarian. i had to start eating meat again...and ended up in the hospital for three days after a food reaction. i never want to repeat that experience again. especially since the doctors and nurses in this particular emergency room were not that familiar with MAO inhibitors, and i had to tell them what was going on with me.  5  Depression If not carful on dosage I find it very difficult to look out into a bright sunny day as if I was being "snow blinded" in the winter. As soon as I lower my intake by one pill a day (from 4 down to 3) the problem goes away. Sexual side affects: yes. At about the age of 60. Problems with food: no. Problems with having operations: no. When I lower my dosage too far I get to be very hard to live with and I have the feeling, and say it, SO WHAT, I DON'T CARE WHAT HAPPENS. Sleep is difficult but with the doctors help I have a Rx for sleep. I have stopped taking it twice but each time I found it difficult to think and almost impossable to complete a thought line. While on Nardil I have several miner operation, including dental, and one major operation, Cancer of the Prosrate. Problems after the operation: Less then many of my freinds have. M 73 35 years

4  Bipolar disorder, PTSD insomnia, postural hypotension (passed out a few times when first starting the drug), loss of sex drive, weight gain, dry mouth. This is the only antidepressant I've ever been on that has seemed to help. Other antidepressants either didn't work at all, or made me extremely manic. It was a last resort and I'm glad I tried it because it has really helped me. The side effects are hard to deal with sometimes, but it helps and that's what counts. Also, it is very important to follow the diet because I ate the wrong food once and ended up in the ER. F 25 1 years

2  Panick attacks and depression None of the spacy feelings I had with ssri's. I felt sleepy during the day and had difficulty sleeping at night. I eat pizza and have the occasional glass of wine with no problem. I developed a sore throat and sinus infection about a month into it and have been extremely fatigued. Has not helped with mood at all. Anxiety is the same, maybe a little worse. I also take Klonopin for anxiety ( have been on it for years) M 39 6 weeks

5  Social Anxiety and depression Low blood pressure on standing up. Sleeplessness. Better sleep when taking dose before bed. Can eat most foods on the restriction lists, but there are definite MUST NOT eat foods see link http://www.dr-bob.org/babble/20010814/msgs/75408.html Some doctors don't like prescribing it due to unjustified fear of side effects so I had a hard time getting it. Nardil is the only antidepressant/social anxiety drug that has worked for me. After going on the SSRI merri-go-round as well as lithium, tricyclics, mood stablisers, I thought there was nothing out there. Nardil pretty much started working for me after two weeks of 45mg, no suicidal thoughts since being on it, a lot more talkative and less inhibition which helps with my social function. M 26 2 months

4  Depression Low blood pressure when standing or climbing stairs at first, weight gain, lack of energy, hypertension if you make a dietary mistake, dry mouth, constipation, difficulty reaching orgasm Well, it worked well enough - was suicidal and about to undergo ECT prior, and was able to at function somewhat when on it. Nothing else ever helped, and even this only takes the edge off, but it was enough. The side effects really suck, though. After about five years, not really helping anymore; the withdrawal was horrible - nightmares, nausea, dizzyness - and having my bodily functions return to normal felt really strange and took a couple of weeks to get used to. Worth it if it's your last hope - it works sometimes when nothing else does. M 39 5 years

5  anxiety, depression They say Nardil makes you gain weight but I lose weight every time I'm on it. I lose about 10 poundsd, which makes me svelte. The only problem I had was insomnia, which is cured by taking Seroquel (150 milligrams). The other big thing before I forget is a tremor. What on earth do I do when my hands and face are shaking. what can I do for the shakes? F 5 days

5  Depression and social anxiety Minor constipation at first. Unfortunately, severe insomnia - I went from someone who slept through the entire night, every night, without a problem, to only being able to sleep 3-4 hours a night. Nardil is amazing. It completely and totally kicked my depression's ass within about two weeks. My only regret is that I ever wasted time with SSRIs - they were completely useless and ineffective compared to what Nardil has done for me. I can't say enough. I absolutely love this medication.
