| 5 | No more Kids | Since I started with the shots 17 years ago the only side effect is that I have no period. I have not gained any weight, matter of fact when I started I weighed 175, now, I am a size 10, and weigh between 135 and 145. I have been this way for all these years and have yet to suffer. I take this in pill form, not Depo shot (you couldn't get me near a Depo shot, which really wrecks your hormones, if you paid me). Difficult to get the dose and timing right, though. Doc initially told me to just take it the first 10 days of the month (and then first 20 days of the month when we upped the dose) because my periods were irregular -- bleeding was still heavy until I changed it follow my natural cycle (when I used to have it) more by taking the last 10 days and first 10 days of every month. Instead of taking 1.0 mg of estradiol with the Provera, I cut my estrogen pill in half so take 0.5 mg daily and NO PROVERA. I think my uterus will be fine. I will NEVER take Provera again. My food cravings are gone and I have lost 7 lbs in a month because I have the energy to exercise and can resist food better. I feel my sex drive was going away in the last year, don't know if it was the Provera but since off it for a month and staying on the 0.5 estrogen (break pill in half), my sex drive is way better. If my gyno says I can't take 0.5 mg of estrogen without the Provera (since I have a uterus) I will say NO WAY am I EVER taking Provera again. I'll keep the lower dose estrogen and hope the uterus will be fine. I might try vaginal estrogen cream, but it's way more expensive. I hear you don't need Provera if you use a cream. I was surprised to see that the comments people were leaving said that they gained weight, had mood swings, and felt tired. I had the opposite effect. Last Feb. my doctor took me off Provera. I had severe mood swings, was very tired, and in spite of going to the gym 3-5 days a week, I gained 20 lbs. Apparently, my body needs Provera. I am now back on it. I started it again 4 days ago and have already lost a pound and I FEEL NORMAL! I truly believe that if you are having adverse side effects, talk to your doctor. You could be on the wrong dosage or medication altogether. PROVERA (MEDROXYPROGESTERONE ACETATE): Medroxyprogesterone is a type of female hormone (progestin). This medication is similar to the progesterone that your body naturally makes and is given to replace the hormone when your body is not making enough of it. This medication has several uses. In women who are not pregnant and not going through menopause, this medication is used to treat abnormal bleeding from the uterus and to restore normal menstrual periods in women who have stopped having them for several months (amenorrhea). Medroxyprogesterone is also used as part of combination hormone replacement therapy with estrogens to reduce menopause symptoms (e.g., hot flashes). Medroxyprogesterone is added to estrogen replacement therapy to reduce the risk of cancer of the uterus. This medication must not be used to test for pregnancy.
