REMICADE  (INFLIXIMAB):  This medication is used to treat certain types of arthritis (rheumatoid arthritis, arthritis of the spine, psoriatic arthritis), certain bowel diseases (Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis), and a certain severe skin disease (chronic plaque psoriasis). In these conditions, the body's defense system (immune system) attacks healthy tissues. Infliximab works by blocking the actions of a certain natural substance (tumor necrosis factor alpha) in the body. This helps to decrease swelling (inflammation) and weaken your immune system, which slows or stops the damage from the disease.    (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

5  crohns Disease Totally wiped out for a few days after treatment. This is the only side effect I have experienced. Thankfully! I have had Crohns Disease for about 24 years. I was not responding to any other drugs and My doctor recommended a new experimental drug. I have been taking Remicade for Crohn's disease for around 20 or more years back when it was experimental. I've take it every 8 weeks for the last 20 years and I have never to this date had any Crohn's symptoms. It is truly a miracle drug! M 48 20 years

5  severe, fistulizing Crohn's disease Loss of efficacy when hospital infusion room gave me the wrong (lower) dose. After an additional 600 mg, I got the Remicade working well again. I am 76-years-old. I was one of the first 100 patients placed on Remicade. I take it as a monotherapy. I've never had any surgeries. The doctor who gives me my infusions, wants to take me off the drug. I won't let him do it. I'll find someone else if I have to. Remicade is a miracle drug that gave me my life back. F 76 18 years

5  Crohn's Disease, Ankylosing Spondal I have had a couple of itchy periods after infusions. I took Benadryl for a while pre-infusion. I was a test subject for this medication and I'm sure I would have been dead if I had not received this drug. F 47 15 years

5  Crohn's Disease Nothing that I can identify as a direct result of the drug. I've been taking Remicade every 8-10 weeks for 14 years, starting when I was about 16 years old. It was a new drug when I started, and the rapidness with which the administration of the drug has gone from an intensive ICU experience to a very casual environment is apparent. I have been stable since my initial 1-year bout after diagnosis as a result of chronic diarrhea and fistula. Highly recommended, revolutionized the treatment of this disease. M 30 14 years

5  Crohn's Disease Volunteered to be guinea pig for my GI Dr after it came out because nothing else was helping my fistulizing Crohn's. To this date, I still consider it my wonder drug. Within a week of my dosage, fistulas disappear and my active life goes on. Slight headache after infusion, and a little tired, but I am on THRIVE by Le-Vel, and have all kinds of energy. I feel like as though I have converted back to my teenage years, before the Crohn's Disease. Worried about reading all the bad side effects scares me, but so far, so good for me. Live each day to your fullest. This has given me better quality of life, plain and simple. Was told at age of 19, my probability of reaching 30 was slim. I am now 50, having been, and still on Remicade, living a very active life. F 50 14 years

2  Crohns Crohn's symptoms relieved, but now experiencing hair loss and swelling ankles. The hair loss is far, far worse than when on 6mp. This is utterly devasting. Doctor is blaming the hair loss on Crohn's, but it's never been an issue until this high dosage. F 49 14 years

5  ulcerative colitis No side effects I'm aware of Remicade saved my life over 12 years ago, when nothing else could stem the monster flare that had me hospitalized for two weeks, critically anemic, needing daily transfusions, IV nutrients, IV steroids, etc. I started Remicade as the last non-surgical resort, and it was like flipping a switch to "Life On." I've never had an adverse reaction after all these years of getting infused every eight weeks. I've never had a real flare on Remicade. It's like I don't have U.C. I'm a bit sleepy afterwards, but I think that's partly the antihistamine I take beforehand. The price is gross profiteering, but if you make it to Medicare, the coverage should be Part B, not D.  4  Crohn's Disease In the last year I have developed water on the knee (both) when I am due or over due for my treatment - once I have the treatment the swelling goes down and I'm fine. My concern is that, my being on Remicade for such a long time has cause my system to depend on the Remicade to take care of my joints. I question if it is possible that my system is no longer doing a much needed function because it assumes the Remicade will do it. I do not have arthritis and I have no history of it. Remicade, has in many ways, enabled me to live a fuller life. I go longer between surgery's, eat more, go out more often and go the the bathroom less often. My two greatest concerns are 1.The cost -is horrendous $12,000.00 a treatment and at 4 to 5 treatments a year,(not counting Dr's visits, test, surgery's and meds) how long will I be able to live within my insurance cap. 2. What will the long term effects be?? F 50 12 years

2  Crohns Disease Brittle loss of hair, skin rash on left eye socket, vision impairment in the same left eye, groin, right arm and shin, Continued Crohn’s flares occurring 1-2 times/2 months. Continuous diarrhea, seemingly lack of absorption. Believe it is also is the cause of acid reflux, indigestion, loss of appetite, tiredness, loss of weight. Any of these symptoms occur at any time no matter the infusion introduction. At first, Remicade really worked-your body is smarter than the drug remember that, it will adjust. Be prepared to adjust/adapt. Every Crohn's patient knows how to adapt given our disposition. I tended to ignore the side effect symptoms given the trade off I thought I was benefiting. Diagnosed at 12 years old-48 now. Resection surgery 1983 & 1984. Gallbladder removed 2010. M 48 12 years

1  Crohn's The 3rd infusion I broke out in hives, throat closed, etc. I was prescribed benadryl b4 infusion & had infusion rate decreased. I had similiar reactions probably 3-4 x's at least thru out yrs. I was nvr very consistent w/ infusion & had them every 10-12 wks instead of every 8. I quit taking Remi when I got pregnant & breast fed for almost 1.5 yrs. Remi didnt work as well when I resumed so my dose was doubled. That was 2 yrs ago. 4 wks after last infusion I noticed the following: hard, swollen lymph nodes all over body (neck the size of golf balls); dry scaly skin including soars in scalp; rash on face, neck, back, arms, & legs; itchy skin; night sweats; chest & back pain; joint & muscle pain; sinus soars; dry cough; neuropathy all over body; headaches; chills w/out fever; hair loss; pee all the time; extreme tiredness; the list goes on. I had these symptoms b4 but not at same time & minor versions so nvr put 2 & 2 together. My GI told me that I prob. h Not sure how I feel about Remicade? I guess it will depend on whether I have something life threatening from it after further testing. I was always afraid of Remicade given its strength and the side effects that are possible hence me getting it every 10-12 wks instead of every 8. Given the extent of my disease, my GI really encouraged me to use it. I do think it played a role in me being in remission (or close to it anyway) for a decade or longer. CAUTION: Listen to your body...closely. YOU know it better than your doctor. If you think something is "off", communicate it immediately. If you don't think you should take it any longer, than don't, and come up with a better game plan. Immunologically, this medication is pretty scary stuff... I can personally attest to that.  5  Rheumatoid Arthritis There have been literally no side effects. Possible occasional fatigue right after the infusion. Otherwise, there have been no issues yet. Over the course of the 10 years of treatment, my disease has spread to other parts of my body, now including spine, hips, jaw, and most all internal joints. My peripheral joints are still minimally affected by the disease. Remicade keeps the pain and debilitation to ~2 compared to ~8 without Remicade on a 1-10 scale (10 being the worst). M 27 10 years

5  Crohn's Headaches, dry peeling skin at the corners of my eyes, umpteen UTIs, had a ureteral reimplantation last February, crabby, muscle pain. The list goes on. I've been on Remicade for 10 years.  1  R ,A. Sarcoidosis mid to upper stomach pain, body aches, muscle weakness, high blood pressure, blurry vision, mom breast and gastric cancer My mother died from this drug. For awhile it gave her relief from her R.A. Then she was having upper stomach pain. She was on the drug 10 years, and then developed a rare bone cancer, lightning speed growth in her breast. The Dr, wanted more testing to see if she had it anywhere else and low and behold the other side affect is gastric cancer. She had that too. They said she had maybe 6 months to a couple years. she made it 1 year.Bless her sweet loving soul, these are sad days for our family. My father is dying of a broken heart. I was on Remicade for 4-5 infusions but quit when I immediately found out she dx with cancer. I was put on it for sarcoidosis pain. My mom had been on it 10 years so I thought I should be OK. I was given a black box warning drug of side effects. I read rare fast growing cancers both breast and gastric. I was shocked that this was happening to my mom. I discontinued. I now have upper stomach pain and am scheduled to go in for upper endoscopy as I now also have trouble swallowing. They said I have achalashia motility. But want to due a biopsy and botox as My esophagus isn't working correctly.I never got relief from remicade, my eyes are blurry and my joint and muscle pain is horrific. I can't blame it all on remicade because I had these symptoms prior to my infusions, but I can't say I got any better and now my symptoms are worse or exasperated from the drug. M 76 10 years

5  Reiters Syndrome (form or RA) Mild tiredness the day of infusion. No significant side affects. The first day I had an infusion 9 years ago, I felt immediate pain relief that day. Remicade has allowed me to live a normal lifestyle ever since. No joint pain or swelling, amazing really. No significant side affects that I am aware of, I wonder about the long-term side affects though. M 42 9 years

4  Crohns shortness of breath with first few treatments; went a period of about 2 years of extreme itching; dry thinning hair; chronic sinus infections. Had partial colectomy in 1991. Crohns returned in 1999. Remicade has kept me from undergoing additional surgeries and keeps the obstructions and other symptoms under control and manageable. My body is becoming immune to Remicade and other treatments may have to be sought. F 49 9 years
