Remicade just had little effect, and that didn't last but four weeks. - I was on 6 week infusion intervals. INCREDIBLY EXPENSIVE. The drug helped with pain at first, then she experienced extreme fatigue, loss of appetite, unexplained body rashes and confusion. She was admitted to the hospital after she had gotten down to 87lbs and could not eat at all. Various tests were done for cancer or other diseases and all were negative. She developed idiopathic pulmonary edema and died of heart failure within one month of being admitted to the hospital. Prior to taking Remicade, she was spunky, vivacious 81 yr old. My mother deteriorated over a period of two weeks from an on-the-go wonderful grandmother (to 20 grandkids!) as well as an avid gardener. A year or so previous my mother ate some meat which disagreed with her. My sister recovered but she developed diarrhea that wouldn't go away. She was running to the bathroom constantly and it limited her life greatly as she couldn't leave the house. Her doctor diagnosed her with Chrohns (with no previous history of any digestive/bowel issues)and put her on Remicade pills. The pills helped. She would wean off them and the diarrhea would return. (Prior she had a trial of antibiotics which really helped but because they were really strong her doctor said she couldn't take them for a long time thus the Remicade). The issue kept coming back whenever she weaned off the pills. In October 2019 she had a bad case of vertigo with no known cause. Many test were run and came back negative. She was in rehab for 1 month and was able to resume normal activities upon arriving home. We all breathed a sigh of relief with no one questioning her medication because her doctors didn't. At the end of May 2020 my mother's handwriting changed and she began to slur her words. We thought it was a stroke. She entered the hospital. All test came back negative for stroke and cancer. She deteriorated more and quickly. | After multiple CT scans they thought they may have found a glioma at the brain stem. It wasn't showing in previous scans. They did a biopsy. It came back positive. Even though they saw no visual evidence of cancer during her biopsy she deteriorated to needing a feeding tube and, within two weeks, was gone. For six days she held on in our home proving to be the fighter she was and how strong her body was. They said she had maybe 6 months to a couple years. she made it 1 year.Bless her sweet loving soul, these are sad days for our family. My father is dying of a broken heart. I was on Remicade for 4-5 infusions but quit when I immediately found out she dx with cancer. I was put on it for sarcoidosis pain. My mom had been on it 10 years so I thought I should be OK. I was given a black box warning drug of side effects. I read rare fast growing cancers both breast and gastric. I was shocked that this was happening to my mom. I discontinued. I now have upper stomach pain and am scheduled to go in for upper endoscopy as I now also have trouble swallowing. They said I have achalashia motility.But want to due a biopsy and botox as My esophagus isn't working correctly.I never got relief from remicade, my eyes are blurry and my joint and muscle pain is horrific. Its now 90 days since my last infusion. Im still having some stomach cramping and back pain daily. I count the days until its exited! The crohns area is not much worse than when I started remicade. After 2 visits to the ER because of remicade one doctor said, when you get a 2 month infusion you are kind of stuck....after 90 days since the last infusion im still in a deficit in all ways. After 8 months of recognizing the horrible toxicity of this drug I am still suffering the consequences of it. 5 visits to the ER. Loss of weight 60 pounds in 8 months. The last ER visit I was transported to a larger hospital where a picline was implanted to feed me. I am 5'7". My lowest weight was 100. A skeleton of myself. The remicade caused absolute loss of any appetite. I've caught a couple viruses and now have sibo. A skeleton body with a 9 month pregnant belly. Its been an ongoing costly nightmare. Most of my hair is gone and I look like I've lost 5 years of my relative youth. Readers, look into why you are having your symptoms. There are reasons. These biologics COVER the symptoms and introduce worse problems. REMICADE (INFLIXIMAB): This medication is used to treat certain types of arthritis (rheumatoid arthritis, arthritis of the spine, psoriatic arthritis), certain bowel diseases (Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis), and a certain severe skin disease (chronic plaque psoriasis). In these conditions, the body's defense system (immune system) attacks healthy tissues. Infliximab works by blocking the actions of a certain natural substance (tumor necrosis factor alpha) in the body.
