| 1 | Sjogrens | Rheumatologist prescribed Plaquenil for inflamation due to autoimmune disorder. On third day, I developed an itchy bright red rash on neck. Stopped medication and started taking Benadryl for the itch. Two days later the rash spread to my chest, stomach, and back. Went to urgent care where I was told it was most likely a reaction to the Plaquenil. Received a cortisone shot and a prescription for Prednisolone (six day pack), and an antihistamine. When I asked the urgent care doctor how long it would take to clear, he said that it was going to get worse before it got better. Well, true statement on his part! The itchy rash moved all over body except legs and feet. My face has peeled as if I was sunburned (face did not itch but was red and a bit swollen). Two weeks later, and after a follow up with an allergist and primary care physician, I am still itchy and the rash is starting to disappear. My rheumatologist said that some patients do not do well on the generic, so she put me back on the name brand. | I've been taking Plaquenil for 16 years, and except for the generic not being effective for me, I've had no problems. If I forget to take it, I can definitely feel it! I've always gone in for twice-yearly eye exams and so far, I'm doing very well and even my ophthalmologist is very surprised. My blood results showed the presence of antibodies ( ANA, Histone autoabs, U1RNP autoabs, Rheum abs). Amongst other findings my neutrofils where low, lymphocytes where high, and eosinofils where high. Also, the tourniquet was left on my arm the entire time and thats usually a no no when checking blood for certain things because it can cause inaccurate results. He said little about my results other than diagnosing lupus. I have had alot of symptoms of Sjogrens syndrome as well and severe dry skin all over, dry mouth, and dry eyes are just to name a few. PLAQUENIL (HYDROXYCHLOROQUINE SULFATE): Hydroxychloroquine is used to prevent or treat malaria infections caused by mosquito bites. It does not work against certain types of malaria (chloroquine-resistant).
